All three of my kids are going to preschool for the first time this fall (4 1/2 and 2 1/2 twins). All of my kids are rather petite so I'm wondering if anyone has any backpack recommendations? They will just be going to half day preschool with lunch at home. I'm thinking the tiny backpacks we have for the twins will be ok, but maybe get something that will transition to kindergarten for my older one? Recommendations on something that lasts but not huge?

We bought my oldest a backpack from LL Bean. It's lasted two years so far and I think it could make it to Kindergarten!

If you want one to work for kinder it needs to be big enough to carry a full size folder. We ha e He pottery barn one (small NOT the preK one)

@hilary: yes! It's big enough for a folder and his lunch box but not so big he can't walk around with it.

Lo was 3.5 starting preschool but very petite and pbk size small was fine for her. She was even able to carry it herself with the lunchbox attached. Any smaller than that it a waste I think because you can't fit a folder or regular sized paper so everything would have to be smushed in. Also all the other kids had that size and I don't know about your los, but mine would have had a fit if hers was smaller (ie for baaaaaabies lol)

We did the smaller size from Lands End for preschool and it fit everything perfectly. It's still in great shape, so she will be using again for kindergarten.

@hilary: NOT the preschool sized back pack from PB kids! I just made that mistake ordering one for my daughter. It literally just came in the mail today and I can't even fit her lunch box in it.

I bought DS a kids backpack at the Patagonia outlet. It was big on him at the beginning of the year (18month class) but will look less giant in the Fall and will probably fit until K.

My entering Kindergartner is on the smaller side for his age and we've been using the small size pottery barn kids backpack. That's been working pretty well for us because the medium looks like half his body size but I do think it isn't going to last us much longer than kindergarten.

@Alba4: this is what my kiddo requested too (the mouse version because it is "whole pink") but I don't know if it's big enough to fit a flat piece of paper in it? Or even a lunchbox?

My MIL bought DD the cutest backpack for her birthday. She got it at Mountain Equipment Co-Op. I found it on Amazon too. It's the perfect size for her, she's quite a petite 4 y/o.

Are you sure you need one? We didn't really have to carry much to/from the car on a regular day, just maybe a sweater and her lunch bag, and whatever was in the mailbox for the day. None of the kids in dd's class used them that I noticed.

@caterw: the Skip Hop animal bags will NOT fit a flat piece of paper or a folder. We upgraded to the Pottery Barn "small" (not PreK) bags for this reason. My girls are tiny (the oldest is 41 inches and 34 lbs at 5), yes, but I figured there's no point to a backpack if I still have to carry their junk by hand bc it doesn't fit.
@2littlepumpkins: This, too! Some schools prefer not to deal with bags. Our preschool last year gave all the kind DD matching tote bags. Easy for stuff to lay flat, easier for moms to carry more than one, and easier for the teachers to stuff quickly since they were all the same bag.

@caterw: yes, you're right re: Skip Hop. Paper doesn't fit so well and a lunchbox definitely wont fit either.
I'm going to have to "upgrade" next year when DS1 starts Kindergarten!

@caterw: @Alba4: the skip hop lunch bag will fit in - just not much else if you choose to do that.. it was fine for the first year of preschool for us! I've seen all pink critter bags somewhere else - either LL Bean or PBK, but the PBK ones are probably also tiny.

The only thing my preschooler uses his backpack for is to hold his change of clothes. It's not like there's school work coming back and forth.

My son used a tote bag when he was in preschool. I had a cute little back pack for him but the teacher complained that it was too much of a pain for him to put it on over his winter coat, so we switched and it worked out great.
