Oh man Zofran was my only means of survival for a couple of weeks, but I weaned myself off of it as soon as I was able. I wish there was something safe too! This scares me for LO #2!

Sigh. Everything is bad for you when you're pregnant. Deadly sandwich meat and cheese, Zofran....What is this Diclegis that is approved? I've never even heard of it, but it's new and FDA approved! (sarcasm)

@erinpye: Thank you for your post. I immediately started googling and couldn't find anything directly from the FDA regarding this updated warning.

@Vegmama: I think that's what's hard about drugs. A lot of times, it's not so clear cut as to what's "safe" and what's "not." Rather, it's what is the safest alternative when going drug-free is not a good choice for either mother or baby. The class system is helpful, but only to a point. Zofran is the only thing that got me through 16 weeks of pregnancy without losing my mind, so I took it. Not eating and not being able to function was clearly not helpful for the baby, so I did what I have to do.

Thanks for sharing, though. I think these conversations are great, as long as doctors and women realize that everyone's needs are different!

Basically, I know you were only trying to be helpful, but please don't post something so frightening without making sure it's legit. It's difficult to explain the absolute misery of Hyperemesis adequately (it's not "just intense morning sickness," it's its own very dangerous and extremely difficult disease). It puts your own health and your baby's health at risk during your pregnancy, and Zofran is an actual life-saver. Moms suffering HG agonize enough over taking meds during pregnancy, and I hope this fictitious article isn't causing them extra anxiety and stress they don't need.

@erinpye: someone in my Facebook feed posted this yesterday and people immediately started freaking out. Like you, I checked for an official notice from the FDA and didn't find one. I hope they address this article soon because it's making the rounds quickly.

On closer study, this article is pretty frustrating. The article is basically completely false. It specifically says that "based on" a study showing a correlation between zofran use and cleft palates, the fda has "cautioned against" using zofran during pregnancy. Not only has the fda not cautioned against using the drug, there has also more recently been a larger study showing no increase in cleft palates in pregnancies involving zofran use.
