That’s awful. Some of the NYC subway stairs are so steep. And if you don’t have a car seat with you, taking a taxi isn’t really a good option either (even ignoring the extra cost).

I lived in Boston when my kids were babies and quickly learned which stations had elevators to use, but I can clearly remember the time my station had a broken elevator. I was lucky that in the minute I stood there figuring out what to do, not one but two men stopped and asked if I they could help and they helped me carry the stroller down the stairs. I could never attempt alone.
