Questions for cloth diaper Mama's

@lolabee: You have so many great responses! I love CD-ing and I think it's so much easier than people think. Sometimes, when life is overwhelming though, I take a day hiatus to get caught up on life and laundry. It helps, and we really like the Honest Co. diapers.

    And now for your questions:

-when did you switch to cloth? Did you use right off the hop?
We started on week 2 once her nubby fell off. I admit, I was sad to see her skinny little bottom leave those teeny-tiny pants.

-did you start out with something like the AppleCheeks starter kit or just do a full stash?
I get the worry about fit, but we started out with a full stash of BumGenius 3.0 and 4.0 and BumGenius Flips that we got from our baby showers. They both served their purpose, and I like them each for different reasons.

-do you use a storage sac/wet bag or cloth diaper pail?
Wet bags all the way! So worth the investment.

-what do you recommend for stain and/or odor eliminator?
The sun is the best stain and odor remover. But I haven't had to deal with the CD stink yet (it's been a year now) and I think that's mostly because I'm careful to use a lot of water when washing.

    -detergent recommendation?
We love Rockin' Green stuff! It smells delicious and it's fabulous.

-do you think a sprayer is necessary? Liners?
You know, I have liners but I haven't used them. I know when she typically poops and I put her in a Flip diaper to save the BumGenius pocket shell. I have a sprayer and I use it often. It takes a bit to get used to the pressure (poop flying everywhere!) but once you get used to it, it's great. We didn't start putting the poop into the toilet until she started solids though, so it's something you could wait on.

-any tips and tricks for washing?
Water, water, water. Wash every other day to keep the stink away, add a wet towel to trick those frontloader washers into thinking there's more weight in there so they give you more water. We do a cold rinse and spin, and a hot wash with an additional hot rinse. I also have a pair of gloves that I use only for CD stuff, for some reason, cold wet pee is so much more gross than the warm ones.

Have fun! I love how much money it saves us and our daughter has only gotten one diaper rash in her first year of life.

@sarac: Thank you for that! I have ordered some cloth wipes but will remind myself not to beat myself up if it doesn't jive. I reallllly want cloth diapering to work out for us, I feel (speaking without experience of course!) like if I commit to it and all it entails all should be good.

@MsMini: Hmmm...this is exactly what I was contemplating about last night when I put in my order. I should probably order a few newborns. Fuzzibunz is your recommendation?

@cvbee: Which brand of newborns did you use? How many did you have? Thanks for easing my (actually DH's) mind about the odor/stains. I'm hoping once the people that matter to us have some experience with cloth they will change their minds, or even if they don't they just keep their negative comments to themselves.

@LittleGBee: exactly what I was just saying to DH - basically bragging about how wonderful the HB ladies are!!

The little newborn disposables are sooo tiny - hard not to oooh and ahh over them. Good to know about liking different diapers for different reasons, I'm hoping this happens for us and we make use of everything I've purchased. If not I guess I'll just sell 'em!

Which wet bag do you use? Good tip on adding the towel, will definitely try that. Ewww to cold wet pee lol! That's awesome your DD only got one diaper rash - so I guess no need for diaper creams? Do you use baby powder? That is a question I haven't asked, is that allowed with cloth?

    Thank you for your response!

@lolabee: We have this wet bag in both medium and large.

I have a small travel wet bag for the diaper bag and I sometimes throw the medium one in there if we're doing a day trip. I also have two large wet bags because they air dry along with the shells, so it's nice to have another wet bag to put the new dirty diapers into. The diapers won't wait for laundry!

Honestly, we got a bit of push back from friends, but once they see our system and how easy it is, they're suddenly quite interested. My husband's co-workers threw us a baby shower and scoffed at our CDing sarcastically saying "Ha, that will last about two weeks!" Whatever. Poop is poop and you're dealing with it no matter what. There have only been two diapers where I was like "oh man, a disposable would be REALLY nice right about now!" but I sucked it up for the cause. Besides, husband-man is the head of the sustainable department at his engineering firm...gotta practice what you preach!

When we notice any redness beginning to flare up we throw on some CD friendly homemade ointment and that always seemed to kick it. We didn't use baby powder because of the supposed link to cancer or something, and the wicking material on the diapers does a great job at keeping them dry.

Also, starting around 6 months she woke up more so we started using throw-aways at night, it seemed to help lengthen her sleeps. We also use that time to slather on some aquaphor to keep her bottom rash free. We're still kinda searching for a good nighttime diaper.

@LittleGBee: Thank you for the link. Eeeks! I didn't know about the supposed link to cancer from baby powder I will be researching that for sure. I guess a lot of the issues caused by disposables will be automatically eliminated with the use of cloth!

@lolabee: Yep, I'm happy with gDiapers. I like that we have the flushable/biodegradable insert option for when we travel. I like the velcro tab closures vs. snaps. I like the fit (they fit my small fry Toddler X well). I like that they're more reliable overall than disposables. And yeah, they're super cute too.

@lolabee: For newborn diapers I would probably go for lil joeys by rumparooz, my one size of choice is fuzzibunz. My girlfriend did like fuzzibunz sized diapers in small for her newborn though.

@lolabee: I used the Grovia AIOs. I only bought enough for 24 hours (maybe 18?) and committed to washing daily. This was fine for me, but they took 2 cycles in the dryer to dry; whereas pocket diapers are bone dry in one cycle. If I were to do it all over again, I'd might not choose the same diaper (maybe I'd do fitteds with covers) because of the dryer time, but that's just what you get with an AIO organic cotton diaper. (I currently have one fitted cotton AIO and it needs some air drying after the dryer cycle too). But I was a little scared of some of the cloth options that I didn't understand, so the AIO to start with worked for me at the time. I am also happy that I splurged on the NB diapers because it was so cute to see him in his tiny little diaper.

@red_seattle: Thanks! I've bought a couple Flips so we'll have an option for the biodegradable insert as well. Figured they would be fabulous for travel.
@MsMini: Thank you for your suggestions! I am still on the fence about newborn sizes, will have to chat more with my DH about it.
@cvbee: Thanks for your input on the newborn diapers! It would be sooo adorable to see them in teeny cloth diaps. I picked up a few Peachy Baby's (made locally, AI2's!) and they fit starting at 6lbs, hoping they will be sufficient for our LO. How big was your LO when born and how long did your newborns last for?

Those sound great. My guy was 7 pounds 15 ounces when he arrived, but then he got down to much closer to 7 pounds before going back to birth weight. I used them for about 6 weeks. He still fit them at 6 weeks but he was peeing big pees by then, which they couldn't handle reliably.

Adding a pic I took of his bellybutton (happens to show the diaper) around 2 weeks old.

We started at about 2weeks pp. We have a variety of brands all of team are one size. I like greenbees and rump apropos the most. Both brands were good for my baby (he is off the charts for weight and 90+% for everything else). Plus, greenbees diapers are $6 for solids.
