I listen to NPR on my morning/afternoon commute, but my commute is like 20 minutes, and half the time my 4yo wants to listen to his music rather than the news (which I understand). I'm trying really hard to rely on credible, informative news sources, rather than all the click-baity facebook news links, but sometimes it's hard to know what's what. My sister just sent me an article from NY Mag and that read so sensationalist to me. Where do you get your reliable news from? [free is preferable]

I'm a news junkie. I subscribe to the NYT online edition and The New Yorker. Granted, these are left leaning publications, but their news reporting is based on facts (not to be confused with opinion columns). I also read the Washington Post on FB since you can access their articles free that way, and I have the NPR and BBC apps on my phone. I also listen to a few newsy podcasts.
@Truth Bombs: it's unfortunate that so much of the WSJ content is subscriber only. There are articles that I would be curious to read, and I am curious about their opinion columns, but they are often behind the paywall. I can't subscribe to everything!

I favor The Washington Post and the New York Times, but they definitely lean liberal. I have no problem with that because I don't believe in false equivalency
Also, I'm not troubled by reading liberal news sources because I feel that I understand the conservative perspective thoroughly considering the majority the past 10 years was spent in close contact to extreme conservatives ( like, to the point of thinking most federal department should be disbanded, even including Department of Education.)

My favorite is Vox. On the graphic @Truth Bombs: was talking about it is in the bubble for teusted sources, though it skews a little to the left. I also started following The Hill because it is in the same category but skews a little to the right. I also listen to NPR and tend to get the same info from all 3 sources so they seem trustworthy to me.
I like Vox because they go really in depth into explaining the news. They also have two awesome podcasts: The Weeds and The Ezra Kline Show.

For politics I've found thehill to be quite good lately. I also pull up both liberal and conservative forums on Reddit to see what news is trending with both sides.

I've been following Dan Rather on FB recently because he's had really interesting, imo reasonable reactions to a lot of the media coverage lately. He started a media company that I also follow on fb, News and Guts, reshares compelling articles, similarly to a huff Po but more thoughtfully and less sensationally.
Otherwise I like NPR, Atlantic, New Yorker, and slate, but besides NPR those skew left

I pay to subscribe to the NYT but they often have specials for new subscribers. I do consider it (rationalize it as) my patriotic duty and it's not that much considering how much I get out of it and how much original, high-quality reporting costs - I think around $15/month. I get the daily headlines emailed to me + the app on my phone.

I started following ProPublica. I think it's non-profit, but I need to verify. I following the normal and somewhat left, but I keep FoxNews in my Newsfeed just to see how they spin the same stories. It's so scary right now. I taught high school English for over 10 years and I'm starting to doubt almost everything I see. It takes a lot of work to verify it before posting and most people don't.

After Trump started to attack NYT we subscribed. It's not a lot of money and I firmly believe in supporting the media (esp ones who are going to stand up to Trump). We also subscribe to The Atlantic, and the Washington Post.

Al Jazeera covers more news from around the world and some of their peices are really in depth. There's also less Trump.
I especially like their documentaries and shorts.

My dailies are the BBC, NPR, WaPo and the NYT. I also subscribe to The Economist and Time.

I mostly read the Washington Post. When I find reporters I really like, I follow them on Twitter. The really great ones don't only share their own stories, they share what other people write that interests them. Sometimes it's just within their organization, but sometimes it's also with other outlets.
By doing that for several years, I've grown a larger pool that I get the news from.
I don't care so much if it's slightly left or right as long as the outlet themselves is aware of that and embraces it. And as long as they fact check themselves (against non-alternative facts).

Want to echo some others who've already posted about considering paying for some news sources.
There's a great deal on the Washington Post if you have amazon prime (it's like 3 dollars a month). That's one coffee a month.
NYtimes usually has deals too. They are my number one go to source and I agree with @hummusgirl that it is my patriotic duty to pay for news. And for me to them especially since they are constantly attacked by Trump.
There are ways to get around a lot of their paywalls but it hit me one day that I literally was willing to pay monthly for Spotify and not the news and that that was messed up!

We have a print/digital subscription to the Wall Street Journal. I really like it because it actually does seem to be fairly balanced and I find it very refreshing to hear both sides' views. DH and I are both grad students, and the student subscription rate is very reasonable at $49 for the year.
I also have a digital subscription to the WaPo.

I also make a point of at trying to watch the information delivered from the source, from either press conferences or confirmation hearings currently. Then, I supplement by reading the transcript.

Also, to answer the original question, I recommend looking for international news sources. When I spent my junior year of college abroad, I actually felt much better informed about American news because it was more balanced and less sensational. People have already mentioned BBC, but I'm going to spend some time looking for other good ones.

He is really getting me through these dark times and giving me hope. @looch: I also think that it's important to look at the original source instead of a clip taken out of context. I would have been skeptical about spin on the "alternative facts" clip or Spicer denying crowd sizes had I not seen and heard them with my own eyes and ears.
@MaryM: agree about this point. I also have a few journalists that when I see their names pop up I'll definitely read what they have written or check out things they are citing.

I like Reuters AP and WSJ. WSJ runs right so that's where I get my daily dose of the opposition. I have stopped following the NYT, New Yorker, NPR, and NYMag even though I agree with their perspective...Just too much angst and I can't handle it!

Reuters is pretty non-partisan. I read all different sources to get a feel for what is going, including conservative sources like the National Review.
The Guardian is probably my current favorite, both the UK and US sites. It's a little more liberal.

Neither are free, but for middle of the road, reliable content, WSJ and The Week are both good. We subscribe to NYT, too, which I think is pretty liberal, and I also listen to NPR although I think it is insanely liberal. NYMag is basically useful only for restaurant reviews and street fashion, IMO.
@Bibliolove: sometimes I check in at National Review too, although it seems like after Trump was elected and appointed all these assholes they did a 180 and stopped running articles trashing him and started scrambling a little--forget it

In case anyone is interested (while we're talking about reliable news sources), the original source for that infographic is http://www.allgeneralizationsarefalse.com/ So not exactly a credible news source, but the methodology behind creating the chart is pretty thorough. The author also has a very interesting post on gun control.
