Should 19 Kids & Counting be canceled over anti-LGBT stance?

I think the actual show will get canceled soon anyway. The shows are pretty boring and they are aired so long after the actual events happen.

I don't think the show itself should be canceled because of their beliefs, but it all comes down to how many viewers they have and how it effects the public opinion of TLC. Shows only get canceled by networks because of money not because of principal.

@avivoca: ummmm... What?!? That's nuts. Wow. I've never been vowed as a bigot by someone before (well as far as I know).

@lawbee11: I follow @fakejoshduggar for laughs. Today's Wednesday, so he rips on the Wallers, another fundie family with ties to the Duggars.

@Shutterbug: @mrs. bird: Exactly. There are many beliefs that I absolutely respect even if I don't feel the same way, but this is not one of them. I wouldn't even say I respect their right to HAVE the belief, just as I wouldn't respect the right someone has to be racist. But as of right now, homophobia is an accepted belief in a lot of places. Oh and I love that image, I agree it needs a better descriptor!

I have conflicted feelings. For one, I try to respect everyone's religion and beliefs, even if I don't agree with them. However, I feel like if it were ANY other religion preaching hate and intolerance, the country would be in an uproar. The double standard sickens me.

@MrsSCB: I agree with you. I think if this were racism it would be canceled, but because it's "only" homophobia I think chances are slim

I think it's entirely possible to disagree with the homosexual lifestyle while still respecting the homosexual person. So no, I don't think that just because you disagree with it for religious reasons makes you a "homophobe" and I definitely don't think that you are preaching hate and intolerance just because you don't agree with it.

  9. Ra

    honeydew / 7586 posts

@whenoceansrise: I don't think all Christians preach hate and intolerance, but the Duggars do. When they support, and work for, the FRC they are very much preaching hate and intolerance.

  10. whenoceansrise

    nectarine / 2053 posts

@Ra: I just wanted to clarify that Christianity does not preach hate and intolerance towards homosexuals. I don't follow the Duggars very much and if they are preaching hate and intolerance towards homosexuals, I wouldn't want anyone to judge Christianity or other Christians because of it. I would be very hurt if anyone considered me homophobic just because I don't agree with it!

@whenoceansrise: But we're not talking about other Christians. We're talking about the Duggars and they most definitely fit the definition of homophobic.

  12. whenoceansrise

    nectarine / 2053 posts

@mrsjazz: Actually, RA said it was the religion preaching hate and intolerance. I wansn't trying to start an argument- I just didn't want anyone to think that it is Christianity that preaches hate and intolerance.

@.twist.: No, people who claim to be Christians preach hate and intolerance. The very core of Christianity is love and sacrifice.

@whenoceansrise: My statement meant if the family were of any other religion. If they were a family of Muslims, and were vocal about their hate towards a group of people, half of the country would be calling for their heads. The hate is "acceptable" because the family is Christian.

  17. MaryM

    pomelo / 5129 posts

@Ra: All American Muslim on TLC only lasted a few months (I really enjoyed that show). And I don't think they even did anything at all controversial...

In the end, I think it's all about ratings. And it seems TLC has a "religious right" viewership based on quite a few shows (the multiple wives ones and duggars), so it doesn't seem like they'll go anywhere.

But I totally agree with those that say the show used to be more interesting. I think they've run out of new things to introduce about their family so the show seems more scripted now. And way less fun.

  19. whenoceansrise

    nectarine / 2053 posts

@Ra: I'm sorry- I didn't realize that your comment was only directed towards the Duggar family. I just didn't want you or anyone else to think ill of Christianity just because of that family!

  20. mrs. bird

@whenoceansrise: one can disagree all they want in their head, no one is asking for everyone to like their relationships, but when one takes action to deprive homosexuals of basic rights given to heterosexuals, like marriage, that makes one an asshole (using Morgan Freeman's word since 'homophobic' is a BS term). I know plenty of Christians who have no issue with homosexuality. I'm not judging the Duggar's religious ideas, I'm judging their actions. It's their actions that make them assholes. Hate and intolerance are displayed when they try to limit rights based on sexual orientation. They can be bigots all they want in their own home, I will defend their right to those ideas for themselves, but I will never support someone who believes their bigotry outweighs someone else's human rights. I guess I would compare it to the ppl who give dirty looks to me & mr bird when we're out because they don't like interracial relationships. I'm totally fine with them disagreeing, hell, I can accept their looks, but if they try to change laws to prevent our relationship, I will raise hell because my relationship with another consenting adult harms no one & should not require anyone's approval.

No, it should not be canceled. They make it clear what their beliefs are and I think a lot of people find it refreshing to be able to watch a reality show that is wholesome and family friendly instead of all the other trash that is on tv now.

    @mrs. bird: I love you. That's all.

I don't necessarily think their show SHOULD be canceled, but I appreciate when corporations take a stand and say this sort of bigotry and hatred won't be tolerated here. Unfortunately I don't think that happens frequently enough.

It absolutely shouldn't be cancelled solely because of their beliefs. Now, if viewers drop because of them and TLC chooses to cancel it, that's another thing entirely obviously!

There's a lot on TV that I don't agree with and wish wasn't on TV but that's the beauty of television - you don't have to watch it and support it.

I don't think it should be canceled. I mean it's been pretty obvious from the get go that they'd hate gay people.

That said, it makes me really sad people feel this way. Why hate? Love should be celebrated.

I've never found them interesting enough to watch, but hate is hate, and I don't think people actively making it clear they hate a group of people, should have the privilege of a TV show platform.

You can argue all damn day "I hate the *behavior* not the person!" That's bull. Being gay isn't a behavior, it is part of who the person IS. So yes, by denouncing homosexuality as a "choice" and something you believe you can pick to hate about a person, you hate the person.

I am a Christian, and don't ever want to be lumped in with the bigots in my faith who hate people God made (and deeply LOVES) the way they are.

Regardless of what we think of their beliefs/religion, they have a right to have them. Its kind of strange in this society that we love to watch reality tv about people with all sorts of problems - cheating, alcoholism, hinted drug use, flaunting riches, superficial lifestyles, teen pregnancy, fraud (all things that hurt others)....but when someone has religious beliefs that don't align with ours, now somehow they are the worst of the worst. Live and let live...As always, if you don't agree, don't watch.

ETA - I realize i just sounded really insensitive. I don't mean that I agree with the Duggar's views, I just meant that they have a right to what they believe. That is all.

It would be one thing is GLTBQ citizens had equal rights and respect in this country, then I'd say, sure, have a tv show and believe whatever you want. But when people's beliefs perpetuate systems of inequality and hate that specifically target certain groups of people, it upsets me that they are given a voice and public platform for these abhorrent views.
So, yes, I think it should be cancelled.

    @blackbird: This!!!

I totally disagree with their backwards beliefs, but as long as they aren't committing a hate crime, etc., I don't think TLC would cancel the show. I bet many "famous" people have some pretty crazy personal beliefs.

Yesss. Cloaked phrases like the that and references to some "homosexual lifestyle" burn me up. I know a lot of gay and lesbian couples and there is no "lifestyle" other than, say, getting up in the morning, going to work, coming home to your family and trying to live life and get by like every single other person on earth.

@Cchoi4: for me it's not about their religious beliefs, it's about political agenda. if teens getting pregnant or those with addictions were using their tv audience to try to strip others of their rights, i would feel the same way, but as far as i know they're not. i agree with you, everyone is entitled to their beliefs- believe them, live them, but don't try to force others to live them. i wish more people would choose not to watch so that the network would choose to get rid of it. also, i abhor most reality television, i think the majority of it is toxic, and i'm with that you many of the topics covered are not positive for society, but it's not common for the members of such shows to be part of hate groups (totally legal! just morally reprehensible) that use their fame to influence the public to promote policy that oppresses large groups of innocent people.

I absolutely think the show should be cancelled, but not because of their beliefs. Their actions, maybe, but not beliefs. I think it should be canceled because it's a ridiculous show, akin to The Real Housewives or Jersey Shore or any other show that is a day-in-the-life-of type thing.

  38. marionberry

@mrs. bird: the fact is that no reality tv show or one family can strip someone of their rights. Only people can vote to give them these rights or take them away. It is the value of democracy. There will always be groups of people who differ in opinion from you but that is the value of free speech, both ways. As my mom always says, we vote with our dollars and our actions. If enough people disliked the show and it's content it wouldn't be popular and TLC would not carry it. So for those who oppose it being on air, don't watch it. And if enough people agree with you it will go away on its own.

@mrbee: Personally I really hate political items even being on HB. This group is supposed to be about uniting moms, not dividing them.

  39. .twist.

@marionberry: HB is for uniting parents. That includes moms and moms and dads and dads and moms and dads.

@.twist.: Well obviously I meant that, just saying political items do not tend to unite people, and this site is not cnn - ie not meant for a political purpose.
