@marionberry: your mom is a wise woman, we do vote with our dollars! i don't have cable, so i don't have any pull with cable networks since my tv viewing doesn't effect them, but i don't eat chick fil a and if we had a hobby lobby, i wouldn't shop there either, i don't give money to the salvation army, it's important to me that my $$ not go to things i don't agree with. i don't think we have the right to vote on certain things- like same sex marriage, i believe the supreme court should grant that as a right & protect it from people who would vote to prevent it. freedom of speech is a powerful thing and something to be respected. i respect their right to free speech, but free speech doesn't entitle you to a network to spread & recruit for your agenda though. at what point do we say there is a social responsibility for networks not to promote certain ideas? if the KKK wanted a show and enough people watched it, should we allow that? i'm not suggesting the duggar family has anything to do with the KKK or that they are racists, i'm merely making the point media is very powerful and there is a responsibility that goes along with that & most people would agree that they don't want such BS being broadcast. i don't think on the show itself they do much that's extremely controversial, i don't think TLC should be *required* to pull the show, but i do think because of the actions of the duggar family and the way that they use their fame from the show to promote their beliefs that the network should feel an ethical obligation to pull the show, i would at least hope that advertisers would start pulling ads because as your mom pointed out, money talks.

@marionberry: I misunderstood your comment then, my apologies. I guess I don't view reality tv and religion as politics. These discussions aren't meant to break us but make us think. It can't always be about diapers and nap schedules.

Personally, I love a good political thread. Moms (and dads?)can discuss political issues as good as the next person.

I think the show IS doing this to save their butts. It's like any other celebrity ploy to come out with something controversial and hope for some higher ratings from the ordeal. Why not hit America with an sensitive topic such as this. Perhaps this is their actual belief(I know nothing about these people nor do I care) but it's not hard for a struggling network to edit and spin something to however they want. Their belief doesn't offend me. I can easily change the channel and pretend it never happened and go on and watch something else.

I agree, I think this thread has a place. I mean, I am not only a parent, I am a lot of other things and I like to flex my brain on topics other than diaper bags and nursery decor once in a while. As we all know, even parenting topics have the ability to get heated. What is required, in my opinion, is the ability to respect each other and discuss rationally, which I think everyone in this thread has managed to do.

What blows my mind is that statistically speaking at least one of those kids is gay. I can't imagine being born into a family raised to hate me? Just terrible.

@Nskillet: If it is true for one (or more) of them, they will have such a hard, conflicted life.

@.twist.: precisely. I mean can you imagine those conflicting feelings in such a close family? Avoiding self loathing would be near impossible

@Nskillet: I can't imagine. I feel so terrible for any of them who have to possibly battle that struggle. ugh.

@Nskillet: That's a great point! I can't even imagine being in that position.

I think it's pretty pathetic that there was such a freaking uproar over All American Muslim that it got cancelled, but it's okay for the Duggars to spout off ugly things about homosexuality. I realize it's all about the money and advertisers, but I still don't like it. I mean really, hating people for their religion or where their family is from (based on incorrect stereotypes) is apparently accepted - as long as that religion isn't a Christian one, of course! And homophobia is also a-okay. Great. Not saying there aren't people who don't discriminate against Christians, but lets be real, you do not have the same problems as a Muslim person.

My problem is not with 19 kids and counting specifically but with our whole celebrity culture. People who are famous for having a reality show. It's crazy to me. I understand there is a demand for it otherwise it would not be on TV. Perhaps I'm a snob but it makes me sad that our society is so obsessed with an almost voyeuristic need to know what's going on with others. For what it's worth I have never seen the show but have seen a few others in passing over the years, it just makes me sad. For random people to get a soapbox to Promote their agenda to the public because they have some lifestyle that makes good television gives people too much power.

@Ra: Yes my thoughts exactly - if the Duggars were Muslim, there would be uproar and surely no show. They happen to be the right color & faith for people to consider them "wholesome" for literally wanting to outbreed their opponents and supporting hate groups.
