Just saw this on Huffington Post and thought it was interesting. I used to watch this show all the time, but the more I learned about the Duggar family and their beliefs, the more I became turned-off. Now I don't really watch anymore.
What do you think? Should 19 Kids & Counting be canceled?

No. They can believe what they want to believe. A lot of the audience they cater to share similar beliefs, anyways.

I think it's a stupid show. That being said, there's a lot of stupid shit on television, so I don't think it should necessarily be cancelled because they have "traditional", IMO, shitty Christian beliefs
Plus, they'd probably LOVE for their show to get cancelled. Stop stifling them, yo!

I don't think shows should be canceled based on beliefs, unless their beliefs are causing them to lose an audience, or they are directly responsible for people being put in harm's way (like honey boo boo).

@Dandelion: I would agree with you if they had those beliefs but generally kept to themselves. It seems like they're almost using their "fame" from the show to actively lobby against these groups of people, though, which is what I don't agree with.

While I don't agree with any of their beliefs, I don't think the show should be cancelled. There is a lot of differing opinions on TV, theirs shouldn't necessarily be excluded, even if I do think it's stupid and wrong.

No. People that watch and follow them already know what they are getting and probably share their views. There's a lot of pro-LGBTQ stuff on TV too.
And I agree @blackbird: , they'd just play the martyr over it.
It does suck that they're using their platform to promote discrimination and hate but... theyre entitled to their opinion.

I personally don't like them and don't agree with their beliefs so I don't watch them. I don't think the show should be banned bc of their beliefs- they can choose to feel however they want. ppl who disagree with them should stop watching them and then TLC or whatever channel they're on will cancel them if they don't bring in enough $$$.

i enjoyed watching them early on, but now i have a lot of anger toward them. i don't care what you do in your life, what you choose for yourself, as long as you are being responsible and safe with those around you. now they have an agenda, maybe they always did, but i wasn't aware of it. they promote things i do not support. i will not do anything to support them in their agenda, i will do whatever i can to squash it. i wish people would boycott the show, i hope they get canceled.

I mean... they took a trip to the Creation Museum. That episode made me want to hurl.

No, I don't think their show should be cancelled, but I do think it would be nice if many of their questionable (to lots of people) beliefs and practices were more widely well known and they got seriously called-out on them more often. The Duggars get so many free passes because they are “nice”, it boggles my mind sometimes.

If Duck Dynasty got canceled for their racism, and Honey Boo Boo got canceled for their affiliation with pedophilia, then sure, the Duggar show should get canceled for their homophobia. It's 2014. (ps - remember what happened last time we had a heated discussion about the Duggars?

No. I'm all for gay rights and I disagree with their view, but people KNOW what their beliefs are. And honestly through the show I feel like they share their faith as they live their lives but are never pushy about it. I'm an atheist and definitely do not share a lot of their beliefs and I still enjoy watching their show. That being said, their beliefs are very well known and gay couples posting their kissing pictures knew what they were doing. Should they not be allowed to take kissing photos? Of course they should! But they should have known they would have been taken down. I don't understand now why everyone is upset. They didn't release hateful statements or make unkind remarks (ex. Duck Dynasty). I think they released a photo of a quote saying that they didn't have to agree with others beliefs in order to love them as a person or something.
People have a right to their opinions and beliefs. Aside from some extreme anti-abortion posts, I feel like the Duggars share their faith in a loving and non pushy way. And that doesn't warrant their show being cancelled.
TL;DR No because the way they handled it doesn't warrant them as homophobic to me. Just stating that their beliefs are different, which should have been obvious.

@lawbee11: i heard about it, but i didn't see it. i wish they were just a big, close family without all the nastiness toward others, that'd be a show i'd like to watch.
i guess there are a lot of shows with values i don't respect- toddlers in tiaras for instance, the difference to me is that those families aren't going around trying to promote hate or take rights away from people, they're just doing their own thing. if they were going opposing racial equality, would that be worth canceling their show? i view the FRC as a hate group, i don't support hate groups.

I don't agree with their beliefs at all, but I don't think that it should be cancelled. Don't like it or don't agree with them? Don't watch it.
ETA: I have never seen an episode or read anything they have said/done.

I definitely don't think the show should be cancelled! I think it's a great show, and I think everyone should respect their beliefs. Whether or not you share their same beliefs. They aren't harming anyone, and truthfully, they are just living their lives as best as they can against their values. I think it's commendable.

For the record, I'm not trying to open an can of worms or anything, but I would just love to say that I've been to the Creation Museum, and I thought it was great! I definitely plan to go there again when I have children old enough to understand.

@lawbee11: @mrs. bird: I've never seen that IG post, but there is a couple in my neighborhood that has similar sentiments as the Duggar's regarding abortion. They post signs every weekend, calling it human racism, genocide, and tons of other stuff.

I have a few thoughts on this. First of all -- (I think I may have told you this, haha) I was totally the same as you in that I used to watch the show and found it entertaining because they are so different from me and my experiences that they might as well be aliens from another planet! But the more I read about their personal views, the more turned off I was. At this point, I would have no problem with the show being canceled. Given their homophobia and the comments Jessa made about abortion and the Holocaust, I don't think TLC would be out of line to cancel it. Yeah, people are entitled to free speech and all that, but they're not entitled to a television audience for it. And when it comes to things like homophobia, I'm not on board with saying, "They're entitled to their beliefs and we should respect them regardless of whether we agree." I don't respect racism and I don't respect homophobia, and I don't feel obligated to give others a pass on those fronts because of their "beliefs". That being said, I don't think we're at the point yet, unfortunately, where mere homophobia merits taking you off the air if you're making bank for a network. So as long as TLC is making a good profit, I'm sure they'll just keep trucking along

@pinkcupcake: this is what I think! TLC has them because they make them money. If that stops being true then the show will naturally get dropped.
I have a lot of issues with the Palin's but didn't care one tiny bit about the various shows they did.

@MrsSCB: yup, I think you hit the nail on the head. Homophobia (I feel like we need another word for this... it's not like they're afraid of gay people like I'm afraid of spiders... right? haha) is not as universally opposed as racism is at this point, unfortunately. I think that's why TLC probably won't cancel their show, even though, in my eyes, they shouldn't get to have this platform on which to promote discrimination.
