I'm an assistant controller/accountant for an insurance company. No one wants to talk about that either. Other than to ask what company or type of insurance. Unfortunately, you don't want to be aware of our insurance - it's better for YOU if YOU don't know who we are

I just say I'm a social worker. When asked which population I work with I say the elderly in the nursing home.

I work in software! When people ask, I usually say I'm a software developer and I'll tell them the kind of software I work on. I hate when they ask for more information because it can be hard to explain. One time I gave a vague answer about implementing new features and fixing bugs, and I kept getting asked for more details "Yeah, but how do you do it? What exactly do you do?"

I'm a consultant in the HR industry

I find this question to be rude when asked IRL. I never ask it.

I'm an artist. I work when I can, computer work during the day, then projects in the evenings and weekends. And I care for DD.

I'm in sales. I always just give that broad answer and people ask: "what type?" (Medical) "what company?" (Start up/no name) "oh my cousin/BFF/etc works for X. Do you know them"

I say I teach at an elementary school. Most ask if I like it. Some ask follow up questions.

Marketing and PR Coordinator for a historical society. People say they have never heard of the place I work.

I hate this question because I spend enough hours in the week at my job as it is, I don't need to be spending my free time talking/thinking about it too. I'll give a brief description and try to move on.

I work in Quality for an engineering company. Most people don't ask any follow up questions because they have no idea what that means or they assume they know what it means because they also work for an engineering company. (There are a lot of engineers in my part of town.)

I say that I'm a grantmaker, to which everyone says "wow, it must be hard asking for money"... then I have to explain that I'm not a grant writer, but that I work for a Foundation and give away the money.

(and actually, it is surprisingly hard to give away money, but no one wants to hear that. I love my job!)

I don't really like this question either because it is complicated. Right now I'm a stay at home mom. But I do have a photography business. But I'm not advertising right now so I am mostly just doing shoots for established clients on an irregular basis. But I"m also trained as a lawyer and did that until I lot my job when I had LO and am now looking for a job. (Which then opens a new host of questions about what kind of law and I feel like people don't have a great grasp on what a lot of lawyers do anyways).

I usually say administrator in a school. People have a lot of different views on what an admin does and it's usually not what I do. Follow up questions usually consist of what do I do...:-)
I spend about 3 days a week in classrooms and 2 in my office. An instructional coach is a better description than my actual job title.

I need to get better at answering this question. If I say I work at a nursing school, people always ask me if I'm a nurse (I'm not), but if I tell them I work on the research side of things, they ask what I study (I'm not a researcher, either). It's hard to give a short answer because my job is complicated! More often than not I just say I work at the University. Half the time that's enough, the other half of the time I just give a really long boring answer.

Office manager for a law firm. They get really bug-eyed when I say that, but no one asks any questions usually
