Everything I read says no TV until they're 2. I have one friend who had a Yo Gabba Gabba for her 1st birthday party because she was obsessed, so she obviously watched TV early. And I have another friend who's 3 month old will watch TV when she's doing stuff around the house, and she'll actually sit there quietly.
My LO is 4 months old and occasionally I'll have it on in the background and she has no interest yet. Which I'm ok with. When did you start letting your LO watch TV?

They have the baby einstein dvds that are supposed to stimulate their minds.. perhaps its better for them to watch those type of dvds rather than just regular tv? When my nephew was 5 months old he paid no attention to regular tv but loved the baby einstein dvds

I didn't have my children watch t.v. til they were 2. But, they did do the baby dvds and things like that.

When he was about 18 months or so we let him watch Mickey Mouse clubhouse in the mornings.

I started to let her watch at 15 months because she stopped napping altogether and TV gives us (the parents) a bit of a break during what is supposed to be nap time. I have let her watch Sesame Street and Yo Gabba Gabba so far. This is only on the weekends.

Both our parents will try to get her to watch cartoons since she was 2 months. We dont own a tv so she'll just see it occasionally around grandparents

We didn't let him watch any tv until he was 18 months - it started out just one show a week (Thomas the Train) and then eventually he watched a few shows a week. It's gotten worse lately at 2.5, he knows what channel his shows are on and hides the remote from us...yikes.

I couldn't care less about the TV being on, but my husband walks into a room and the first thing he does is turn it on. I'm worried about this around our daughter......
At any rate, I'll try and hold off on TV watching until she is 2 years, but I think the occasional Sesame Street is perfectly acceptable.

@mekarual: I was really worried about the tv being on at first too... but I feel like she's not actaully sitting there watching it. And my friend who's baby had the Yo Gabba Gabba 1st birthday party is now 2, and she's a very smart little girl. So now I'm less worried.

My brother's daughter is one year old and they let her watch whatever they are watching - which is not always "family friendly". They have a video of her watching Family Guy and she is so enthralled. I can't even begin to imagine some of the other shows she has seen already!

I don't think TV is as evil as everyone says. Everything in moderation, I say. I think that as long as you limit the amount of screen time that your LO is exposed to, they'll be fine.
In fact, there's actually a lot of educational media that's available. At 6 months, I let my LO watch short (7 minute) youtube clips of BabyTV. Now, at 1 yr old, she gets about 1 hour spread throughout the day. One of her favorite shows happens to be Yo Gabba Gabba which I actually find to be very well produced. I don't feel at all guilty letting her watch TV cause she also gets plenty of time reading books, playing outside, and interacting with me and my husband.

@mekarual: Wow! No, I don't support LO's watching adult TV shows! I'm sure they don't understand that stuff, but still, it can't be good.

@Red: Your post made me feel so much better! Our 18month old watches around 30mins-1 hour of TV a day (not all at once but in 15-20 minute segments). And I felt so horrible about it because I can just see his brain cells dying every second we let him watch TV! Leave it to pediatricians to make you worry...I let him watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Wheel of Fortune (which he LOVES). But so many of my mommy friends totally restrict TV so I feel horrible whenever I tell them that my LO watches TV.

we let charlie watch youtube videos when he was around 18 months. he couldn't really sit and watch anything for a long period (20 min) until the past month though.

@Red: I totally agree. Everything in moderation! We looove Yo Gabba Gabba too. It's like SNL for kids with all the celebs on it! We took our DD to the live show and my hubs and I had a blast! Lol

I watch some baby einstein with her when I'm losing my mind on her very fussy days, or turn on sprout for a very short while. She's just about 4 months.

I think there is a huge difference between a child being old enough to actually engage with the show and "watch it" v. the TV being on and the kid doing something else (napping/playing with toys etc) in the same room.
There was a huge study that debunked the Baby Einstein videos though.
