Hi Ladies we just welcomed our third little girl into the world on New Years Day. My other two were never big with spit up but this one seems to be spitting up every ounce of breast milk I give her. When I spoke to our doctor about it he pointed out to me that she was congested and tonight we will be trying some saline nasal spray to help with her breathing. My question is when do you worry about the amount of spit up? She has dropped a little bit of weight in less than a week and I'm taking her back on Monday to have her rechecked but it seems that she's not really eating that well and its less than 10 minute increments therefore of course my boobs are swollen and my let down is fast. Any tips? I try to have her in a more upright position when feeding and I've been burping her nonstop!

I don't know about the spit up, but for the feelings you could try pumping before feeding so your letdown isn't as quick.

10 minutes seems very short for a newborn feeding session. Does she just pull off or what? I would do a weighed feeding to see how much she is actually getting. I got a scale from BRU for pretty cheap. Maybe try pumping and syringe feed her more after she finishes on the breast. Burp more frequently? Maybe she pulls off so early because she is getting gassy...idk- just throwing ideas out there. You should probably talk to an LC

Weight loss is normal at first - goal is back to birth weight by 2 weeks. How many wet diapers is she making and is she pooping regularly?

@Mrs. Bum: my oldest was a "happy chucker" due to constantly losing suction and taking in air because of her lip tie, do you think that could be a possibility here? How does her latch feel and is she generally happy baby?
I wouldn't panic just yet because you're both still learning!

She is congested so she's having a hard time breathing as is. Then it's like whenever she starts sucking, she seems to lose interest after 2 minutes? When she does get on a roll each side has been no more than 5 minutes and then it's spit up within 5-10 mins. Bottles she'll eat a little more steady but same spit up timing!

@Mrs. Bum: how many times is she feeding in 24 hours and is she having plenty of wet and dirty nappies? My little guy was always a very efficient feeder and combined with my fast lets it made for very fast feeds! What worked for my first baby was to feed one side then wait 15-20 minutes before offering the other.

@Kemma: I try every 2.5-3 hours and her stools are very normal, I feel like she could have a few more wet diapers but ha between her and the 1.5 year old I'm losing count of who's diaper is whose. Smh
