LO is now 4 months old and I think she's teething for the first time. They say that when a baby is teething he/she becomes extra fussy. Well, what happens when you have an extra fussy baby that's teething? MISERY.
When your LO is teething, how do you help him/her deal with the pain?

Frozen teething rings are a great help and if it gets really bad, check with your doctor about using baby anbesol.

a cold wash cloth works wonders too. anything soft with nubbies on them for them to chew on. Soft spout sippy cups with water might work too.
You can also ask your pediatrician about tylenol.

I don't have a child but I've heard many of my friends swear by putting an Amber teething necklace on their baby...

just offer them a lot of teethers when they're awake. like amy suggested, cold wash cloths are great. i'll write up a guide on teethers soon.

Is she drooling a lot? I swore my son was teething from 4 months, but he didn't get his first until 8 months. I didn't do anything special and I try not to give him Orajel unless it's a matter of life and death, which it usually isn't!

I'm not looking forward to this! My LO has been drooling a lot since 3 months but I looked it up online and it said it's common to drool way before teething. And sure enough no teeth yet.

@looch: I agree. I remember I thought my 4 month old was teething and our doctor basically laughed in our face and said "Everyone thinks their 4 month old is teething". Not nice!!
My daughter got a fever from cutting her first few teeth so I gave her Tylenol then. Other than that, I have never given her anything and she is not a fan of teethers so she has just been toughing it out!

I didn't even know my little one was teething until I saw 2 little white teeth popping out of her gums. The bottoms didn't bother her at all.
I think the top 2 are painful/itchy/uncomfortable because she's drooling more than usual and is really whiny/fussy.
I've just been giving her lots of things to chew on--my fingers included.
I wouldn't use any gels unless you absolutely can't handle the fussiness.

Ugh, this is something I've been dreading! I hope you find relief soon! My LO can be fussy in general too so teething could be difficult. She's not sleeping well anymore as it is

So, my 4month old is NOT teething? I think I fall under the category of thinking that she is. Just drooling like a mother. I think I was just looking for an excuse for her fussiness! LOL.

Right around 4 months they have a wonder week if I remember right (19 weeks). Those are monsters just as bad as teething.

I gave my daughter frozen peas. They are too small to choke on and when they are melted, she just ate them.

My LO was drooling a lot @ 4 mos also and I thought she was teething. She may have been but her first two teeth didn't come in 'til 6 months. When she was little and didn't have the dexterity to hold onto teethers, I would put my finger in one of those finger toothbrushes and let her bite on it. As she got older, wooden teethers seemed to help but not much. When she was actually cutting teeth, I have her infant tylenol to ease the pain.

Cold teething rings, washcloths... I'm trying that mesh teether next. If they're really bothering her, I give her tylenol, or else she gets too fussy to sleep.
@red Their teeth can be moving around way before we ever see them pop out. I can't imagine being in pain for so long, poor babes!

My LO is one of those that WAS teething at 4 months and he sprouted a tooth. He's 7 months old now and 8 teeth already. When things got really bad we gave him orajel and Tylenol. Otherwise, all we did was give him lots of chew toys, snuggled, and we had to wait it out.
We've been having a rough couple of days because I think yet another tooth is coming, so I know how you feel.

hylands teething tablets and gel, tylenol when it gets bad, and I also make applesauce (just steam and puree an apple,) spread that on a baby washcloth, twist it, and freeze it. Liv doesnt like teethers, but she LOVES the aplesauce washcloths. Plus theyre easy to grip and get into her mouth

for pain and fussy episodes, frozen washcloths and teethers work well like others mentioned. when my first DD was over 6 months, we gave Motrin to help decrease inflammation when it was really bad. ETA: and Tylenol for under 6 months.
I would stray away from anbesol and orajel... There was a recent FDA warning for orajel regarding a possible fatal side effect. I have also used it on myself in the past too (to test it) and it is super strong and uncomfortable to be so numb (and I only put a little on myself, imagine what it's like for a baby!). I also have read that if babies ingest it from their mouths, it could likely travel down and numb the throat as well.

This sounds so horrible, so please don't attack me! I have heard that when you can see the tooth about to pop through, like, its RIGHT there, you freeze a spoon, and then take the edge of it, and press it down over the tooth. It breaks the skin for them for the tooth to come through. It hurts for a second, and they will probably cry, but a short lived pain is better then a continuous long one right?!
I never did this as DS just woke up one day with 2 teeth. I really lucked out and never knew when DS was teething!

I think my LO is starting to teeth as well at 4 months. My dr was quite sympathetic and said although he couldn't feel anything in her mouth, doesn't mean her gums are not bothering her. He said she can feel something for a few months before ever cutting her first tooth, so we just have to bear the extra fussiness until then. Luckily it seems the pain comes and goes so generally shes a happy baby otherwise.

Yeah, so practically every time I get a chance, I'll stick my finger in LO's mouth to see if I can't feel anything but of course, there's nothing. SIGH. She is chewing up a storm so I'm sure this is the road to teething, however long it takes.
