We have some upcoming trips, which will be the first since completely switching my son out of his crib and pack n play. I'm looking at the Aerobed Kids, which is an inflatable mattress with sides, but I'm just wondering what everyone does when traveling for older toddlers or kids who aren't quite ready for a bed without rails? Our son is not a good co-sleeper, at all, so I really don't like that as an option. Does anyone have another solution? Just making sure I'm not missing something awesome out there.

I use a pack n play mattress on the floor. I wouldn't use it for more than a couple days, but my little guy usually ends up in bed with us after the first 4-5 hours, so it works for us.

We use the shrunks air bed. We found it on amazon and have used it for several trips now.

As long as there's a bed for LO to sleep in, we bring the side rails with us. We did this for our most recent vacation, and it was the first time LO slept in a big boy bed. Worked great.

@MamaG: I was looking at that one, too, but the Aerobed seemed to be tougher per reviews. But good to hear a blow up mattress worked for you!
@2PeasinaPod: I was wavering between buying some rails since his twin bed has wooden/semi-permanent ones we can't travel with. But I'm thinking he'd have a guaranteed bed with an inflatable.

I've heard people have had good luck wedging pool noodles under the fitted sheet...

My sister uses pool noodles for her girls, and has never had an issues with them fall out!

We will probably just use a twin air mattress once he won't sleep in the pack and play anymore. We are transitioning to a twin mattress on the floor now, so I don't see a need for anything fancy.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Oh good. Is it really lumpy? Just from the pictures it looks like there are huge rows of air and I wasn't sure how comfortable that would be.

@Mrs. Yoyo: what sheets do you use? The reviews seemed to indicate special size which was a negative for us. The Shrunks bed we can use crib sheets.

Are you going to be in a hotel? We just used the hotel crib long after DS was in a bed with no rails.

@lamariniere: We might for a night or two, but we almost solely rent houses or cabins when we travel. But I didn't even think about hotel cribs. That is an option for a short trip we're doing soon.

@lamariniere: @BananaPancakes: I've noticed that hotel cribs are smaller than regular cribs. So for a baby, I would be okay with it. But for toddlers, it's a little too small.

@aegie: I guess it depends on how your kid sleeps? My son is 3.5 and pretty tall, but sleeps curled up, so he was fine on our most recent trip.
it was a pretty normal sized pack n play.

we just put a blanket on the floor. kids don't mind it at all!

@BananaPancakes: sorry, just saw! It has small ridges but DS never complained! He loved his "special bed."
@MamaG: it comes with a soft cover so we didn't really need sheets. Just washed that and threw a blanket on top and he was good.
