My sister and her husband have a toddler sized blow up bed with sides that inflate a bit so they don't roll out. Our DD has slept in it a couple of times and liked it.

Our then 2.5-3yo slept on a pullout couch in a hotel suite. She was already used to a bed by then, but it's a lot lower to the ground if they fall. She still thinks it's cool even though to me it's soooo uncomfortable.

Following. For those of you that use a crib at home and a bed or inflatable toddler bed when traveling, does your kid get that it's a bed/it's time to sleep? DD won't sleep in our bed at all, so I'm worried if we try one of the portable toddler beds she won't sleep there either.

she started sleeping in an extra bed around 2. the first few times it was a mess, but then she moved to a toddler bed a couple months later and it was fine after that.

My son is 2.5 but a big 2.5 (people always guess he's 3-4). He is still very comfortable in a pack n play. That's what my parents have for him and we went to Florida in February and he slept in pack n plays no problem.
(I should add he's a great sleeper, so maybe that contributes.)

If you think you'll continue to travel and the baby would get continued use out of it, Id look into a Lotus Travel crib. Ours is amazing, can't recommend enough. It's a lighter weight more compact folding pack n play but the sleeping area is pretty roomy.

Both of our kids sleep in hotel beds. We are traveling this weekend and the hotel has bedrails which is great. Our kids are 3.5 and 1.5.

On vacation it works better for our kids to sleep near us in a bed because they are in a new room and excited. So we just turn the lights off and lay down and they are out within minutes. And then we get back up and read. They are really worn out from a busy day so its all good.

Our son got too big for the Grace pack n play around 2.5 or so. He didn't seem to mind that his head or feet touched, but I could hear him moving on the mesh and it was pretty annoying.

When we traveled to my in-laws for Thanksgiving he slept in the king hotel bed with us and they had a crib for him at their house. The hotel bed is uncomfortable (because he likes to sleep pressed against one of us) but it works for a couple nights. My parents' house is a suckier situation because we sleep in two twin beds. At Christmas/January when we were there a lot for emergencies, he slept in their older pnp. It actually seemed bigger because he didn't touch the sides as much. I'm not sure what we will do the next time we visit because he will not fit anymore and we just changed him to a toddler bed (he turned 3 last month). We may get one of those air mattresses that have the raised sides for him.
