My son has been in speech therapy since he was 25 months for a moderate/severe speech delay. He said 10 words at 18 months and then only added a handful of words by his 2nd birthday. He's been getting speech therapy 2x/week. He'll be 3 years old next month and is just starting to put two words together. Most of his daycare friends are saying 3-4 phrases already. So he's still quite delayed in speech (although he's made a lot of progress the last few months).

On the flip side, we just noticed that he has some quirky skills. For example, he can count to 200 (we thought it was just 100 but he counted to 200 last night). If I start counting at say 54, he can continue from there. He can identify all of the letters of the alphabet and can sight read a few words (like "baby" and "pop" and "time"). He can count backwards from 20. He can skip count (2,4,6,8). He'd rather watch Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune than Disney movies. He loves reading freeway signs and is really good with directions. He goes up to license plates and reads every letter and number (he's kind of obsessed with this). He can read years, like 1976 (and he'll say it like "nineteen seventy six").

He's very social, affectionate and loves kids and adults.

His development is so uneven that it (frankly) kind of worries me. His language and communication skills are way below average (he can say maybe 200 words?), but his logic/math/whatever it's called skills are average or above average.

I know this isn't normal but does anyone have any experience or know of other children like this? Could his uneven development be due to something more serious? I was up all night worrying about this because I don't know anyone else who has experienced this with their children. =\
