Anyone dealt with this before? LC thinks I have it - not sure if it's from bad latch alone or something else. We have a consultation tomorrow for tongue/lip tie to see if that's contributing/causing it. Anything to help the pain? It's so sporadic, I never know when it's going to happen.

Yes!! I had horrible ones from LOs poor latch. I took 500mg of magnesium and calcium and that helped enormously. Heat also helps.

Yep. I still get them although they're not nearly as painful as they were when he was younger. Mine are definitely from a shallow latch. My LC recommends dry heat to help return blood circulation to the nipple.

@hilsy85: What's the magnesium and calcium do? I take a calcium/D supplement as part of my prenatal regime. I see the pediatrician on Friday too so I'm going to mention it to see if there's anything else she can do. Did LO's latch eventually improve or did it go away?
@Boopers: Dry heat meaning not a warm washcloth but more like a heat pad? I'm thinking she either has a shallow latch that will improve as her mouth gets bigger or if there is a tongue/lip tie issue.

@LindsayInNY: I believe that the magnesium and calcium combo increase blood circulation, which helps decrease the vasospasms. I don't know if it was that combo or LO's latch getting better (he also had a tongue tie and lip tie that were fixed), but by 9 weeks I was pain free. I had been taking the supplements for about 2 weeks.

Yup. They were soooo horrible! The LC I saw showed me this vigorous assuage of the pectoral muscles that helped a bit. Avoid exposing to cold. I covered my nips before turning off the water in the shower and wrapped myself so quickly, otherwise... Extreme pain. Also second heat and magnesium!

@LindsayInNY: dry heat as in a heating pad. I'm sure you've heard our issues- tongue and lip tie, high palate, shallow latch. I still get them if I'm not careful about his latch but even after seeing a chiro and LC multiple times, I've resigned myself to this is how he is and this is how our nursing relationship will be. We've made it almost 4 months though!
Have you had your LO checked for ties? I hope it gets easier and less painful for you. It's great that you're still pushing through!

Yep, it was awful. DD was diagnosed with a posterior tongue tie at 5 weeks and we had it corrected right away. It took about a week for her to readjust her latch but they went away quickly after that.

@hilsy85: I'll have to keep that in mind and try it if it gets worse (it's manageable right now).

@Boopers: We have a consult tomorrow (today?) to check for tongue/lip ties because the pediatrician and LC haven't been entirely sure. They didn't think so initially but what else explains the nipple pain/trauma at this point??

@LindsayInNY: are you seeing a doctor that is knowledgable about ties? Some doctors don't know much about ties or are quick to dismiss that ties cause problems with nursing.

@Boopers: Yes. She's an ENT that has a focus on infant issues, among normal things. I don't know of it's a NYC thing but a lot don't take insurance and require upfront payment and you submit it. She actually takes insurance which is nice.

@Boopers: @hilsy85: We (okay me since I brought her alone and DH isn't totally on board) had her cut today. The ENT didn't think she had ties per se but a shallow latch and cutting would help her open her mouth further. I turned away but still felt so terrible. I'm praying her latch improves so DH doesnt hold a grudge...

@LindsayInNY: those first few days were a bit rough, but she'll feel better soon and hopefully it gets better! Did they tell you or show you any exercises to do once you get home?

@Boopers: Rough how so? Fussiness? Anything I can do? They did show some exercises for under the tongue. I'm not looking forward to doing them...

@LindsayInNY: just fussiness and him being uncomfortable. He was 4 weeks so we couldn't give any Tylenol. I just made sure he got extra cuddles until he felt better
The exercises made me a bit anxious but they're quick. I always did them right before nursing so that he'd feel soothed after doing them.

@Boopers: I tried some baby Orajel tonight. I wasn't sure about Tylenol even though aftercare mentioned it. They said just to do the exercises nightly but the paperwork they gave me says to do it more often? It's really hard to get under her tongue though! Did you have to "reteach" the latch after?

@LindsayInNY: unfortunately getting the revision done didn't really help his latch. I'm still not sure why he has such a shallow latch, I think it's just anatomically how he is, and I've accepted it. I don't say that to discourage you, because revisions help more than not and I really am hopeful that it will help you and your LO.
I would do the revisions multiple times a day for 2-3 weeks to make sure it doesn't reattach. Another bee suggested following a tongue and lip tie group on Facebook. There is a lot of support and information on there.

@LindsayInNY: she just had other issues- tightness in her jaw and neck and a hypersensitive palate that the craniosacral therapy helped with.
