Awkward title, I know, but...
When did walking become your child's primary form of getting around? LO started taking steps around 12 months and at almost 13 months he takes about 10 steps and then drops to crawl. I don't blame him, as his crawling is much quicker and a much more effective means of transportation. I'm just trying to gauge when he will start defaulting to walking.
What was your experience? How long between first steps > many steps + crawling > just walking?

I think you will get very varied responses to this. My son pulled up and practiced standing for awhile before he started to walk. I don't remember all the details but he took his first steps at 10.5mo and was definitely 100% walking by his first birthday. I think it's partly personality driven. Some babies don't mind crawling and some prefer the higher view.

I know what you mean from the title!
My LO was an early walker. Steps right before 10 months, and gradually increasing. She was primarily walking and cruising by 11 months. She would only crawl to the next place she could pull up and then continue to cruise/walk even from 9 months on.

DS took his first steps on Halloween last year. At his birthday (11/18) he would walk small stretches but still crawled a lot. By Christmas he was primarily walking.

My 15 month old started taking steps several weeks ago. She is very cautious and still doesn't go very far without crawling. I'm sure answers are going to vary drastically on here!

I thought your title was perfectly descriptive 
My LO started taking proper steps at 13 months, but I want to say it was at least a month or more before she was exclusively walking. She was a really fast, good crawler so it was just faster to crawl than to walk. It seems like maybe early walkers tend to go to all walking faster, maybe since they don't spend so many months perfecting their crawling? That's my personal hypothesis, based on like, 4 kids.

@ShootingStar: That's kind of what I'm expecting. I figure by Halloween he will be just walking, which would be about 2 months after first steps.
@mrsrain: @ElbieKay: I figured things would vary a lot - I was just wondering what everyone experienced. HelloBee seems to have lots of early walkers (based on the archives), so he's a late walker in the HelloBee world anyways

@LBee: haha, I guess that does go without saying! Our pediatrician said walking can begin anytime up to 18 months, so I'm determined not to worry for a while. I would love for her to be fully walking soon, though, because the more pregnant I get the heavier she gets!

@mrsrain: I've been really determined not to fall into the canyon that is "mommy worry." It seems like every time you crawl back out, you find something else to worry about. I hear you about the weight -- that's why I want him to start primarily walking. On the plus side, though, my arms have never looked better
@Foodnerd81: That makes total sense to me. He started crawling at 6 months - meaning he's done it for over half his life - can't really blame him for defaulting to it!

About a month? DD1 took her first steps just before her first birthday (4/28) and by Memorial Day weekend she was full on walking. DD2 is 12.5m and hasn't taken her first steps yet!

Once my daughter got the hang of it she switched to walking full time. She would walk around stuff for 1-2 months, but wouldn't take more than 2-3 steps before dropping to crawl. Then all of a sudden she took off 15 steps and that was that, she was on the move on feet for good!

For A it was about 2 weeks from first steps to full time walking, but she was very steady from the get go and had been cruising forever. B started pulling up and cruising a couple months after A did, but took his first steps a month after her. It took 4-6 weeks for him to be a steady full time Walker.

A couple weeks maybe? But it wasn't gradual at all. LO was a master crawler and puller upper. He showed very little interest in walking (would maybe take a few steps if he was distracted) until one day just before he turned 13 months he decided he was going to be a walker, and from that day forward walking was his primary form of travel no matter how many steps he would take before he fell. He would just stand back up and start again.

About a month from first steps to full time walking (just over 13 months). He had only been crawling for about 2.5 months prior.

Days. My LO took 3 steps one day, nothing for five days and on her next attempt she was a full fledged walker. She took some steps at a park, plopped down, got up and just kept going to join some kids on the playground. She was 15 months and had been using a walker toy for quite a while.

DD took her first steps a couple days before her first birthday, and it took about 3-4 weeks for her to really find her feet. She was walking more often than not by about 13 months.

A couple of weeks I think. He started taking steps at 10.5 months and he was definitely walking full time well before his birthday. By 12.5 months he was running.
