I was surprised to learn that maternity leave in many countries is required. As in if you return early you will not get paid for any of your maternity leave. The reasoning is that there is a purpose to maternity leave and it will be undercut if unwritten expectations become that women will take less leave.

After my boss returned to work two weeks post C-section (and worked from home quite a bit during those 2 weeks) I can see the pressure and expectations it put on other women in the field to do the same. She was not an effective person for quite a while and quite a bear to deal with so I wish she would've taken longer but the whispering became well she did it why can't or shouldn't every woman do it. Watching her experience and trying to discuss taking a full maternity leave and still be regarded as a serious worker was part of what made me decide to leave that position.

Did anyone else have a similar experience? And what are thoughts on required maternity/paternity leave?
