My pediatrician told me when LO1 was a year that "there wasn't much more benefit." She also told me to stop nursing LO1, but that was because he was losing weight and was legitimate advice for him (turns out I was able to just drop to one nursing session a day, he started gaining weight, and we were able to nurse until he self-weaned at 19 months.) She never mentioned any of that when LO2 got to age 1, though, so I think it was advice directed specifically at our situation.

My pediatrician seems baffled by my still nursing.

@Jess1483: This is what I feel my doctor might tell me when we go in for our 12 month appointment in 2 months for similar reasons. I'm going to continue at least in the morning since that is when she seems to drink the most.

My son's doctor asked if we were still BFing at his 12 and 15 month appts, and was supportive when I said yes. She said he'd probably get fewer illnesses at daycare if we continued, and so far it's been true. He was the only one not to get HFM earlier this month, and I would guess there's some correlation, as he is the only one still BF; he's also the youngest.

None of the doctors at the practice we go to have ever asked about BFing once DD turned 1, and have never said anything about it one way or another.

They always asked, and said, oh that's great. But one doctor did make a comment when I mentioned her not really eating a lot of something, along the lines of "at some point if they are getting so much from nursing they won't want to eat xyz". It was offhand but I remember thinking, well breastmilk has a lot more nutrients than whatever food I was talking about.

Then we met a nurse practitioner in the practice that I really connected with who is a lactation counselor, runs a breastfeeding support group for the community, and obviously was super pro BFing my then 18 month old. She's been our primary since then and is awesome. We are moving and I'm super sad to leave her.

@Foodnerd81: She may be talking about something like my situation, where my son would refuse food and choose only to nurse (this was ages 10 month+), which would be entirely fine, except he was already below the charts for growth and losing weight. If that's something she's seen, that might be why she gave a heads up.

My ob or the ped? I only saw my ob at my 6 week check up and then not until 18 months later so nursing never came up--even though I was still nursing at the time they never asked more about it. I did mention to LO's ped at 2 year well check I was still nursing and wanting to wean and she was supportive and was like "great, if you want to keep going, if you want to stop--take a vacation and take some sudafed." So it was a good happy medium!

We didn't discuss it at their 2 year appointment, but she was supportive at previous appointments. She wasn't ever pushy about it, though, and was supportive of supplementing the first year too.

No, never. I would be finding a new doctor if that was the case. I wouldn't even consider breastfeeding past a year "extended breastfeeding" anyway.

Yep. Not a lot of follow up as I didn't have any questions about it! Just, yep, still nursing. Okay, cool.

My ped didn't even ask. But I think it's because she was gaining and hitting milestones and we were doing fine. He's pretty hands off about personal decisions though. I'm sure he would have offered an opinion or advice had I needed or asked for it.

Yes she was supportive. If she wasn't she wouldn't be our pediatrician.

LO1's pediatrician at the time was also a lactation specialist so she was very supportive but he was so small that we had to see a GI doctor who told me I needed to stop and switch exclusively to cow's milk.
We moved and switched pediatricians and he is generally just kind of ambivalent about things like that. LO2 had more severe MSPI so I waited to introduce cow's milk but despite that, the ped still said it was fine if I wanted to give it up and try something else instead. He just kind of shrugged his shoulders about it - like it's in his script of what to tell parents at that particular appointment but no big deal if the parent doesn't agree.

After a year, she sort of stopped asking and we stopped mentioning it. I think she would have been supportive but it really wasn't a big deal either way.
