I'm not really sure, what age (for me and my lo) I will thing is too old..... Maybe 3? I'm not sure though, guess I will take a wait and see approach.

I think it would be somewhere around 18-24 months for me.

I am wait and see. I hope to make it to at least 2. She'll be 2 in June. Will just see how it goes.
pomegranate / 3272 posts
For me personally, I would say a little bit over a year. But I don't judge others that go longer.
nectarine / 2821 posts
Baby is 4 mo, I would like to make it till 2 ideally, but 1 at the least. But I know even though everything is going well, it may all change in 5 weeks when I go back to work!
As far as too long... maybe for me 3? who knows how ill feel!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
I could probably make it til 18 months? I was happy with 13 months with DS1. And that's my goal for DS2.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
I don't really have an idea of when we'll wean. lo is 13 months this weekend, and I just want to keep going as long as it works...prob 18-24 months? I'd like to stop pumping though...

When they walk over and lift your shirt and start nursing - then its time to quit
DS was 20 months and we were getting to that point - I weaned him
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I quit at 6 months, but I think one year is the max I would ever go.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
I weaned at 14 months and 13 months but I would say 18 months is my max.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
We stopped at 15 months (he got sick and couldn't latch, and I dried up...12 months was my long-term goal, so I wasn't pumping or anything). I think 2 would be the age that I would want to reassess. Honestly, though, my kid is so huge now that I think it would be weird for me (personally). He's a bit over 2.5 now, but like the size of a 3-4 year old, like a little kid, and I think that could make me a little bit uncomfortable.
grapefruit / 4988 posts
Probably 2 for me, although that might change. I used to think 18 months but now we are there and it's fine.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
I probably wouldn't go past 18 months, but it doesn't bother me when other people BF longer. We stopped at around 14 months.
honeydew / 7230 posts
I'm not sure yet. Probably two, although I hope they wean themselves before that (like, substantially before that). I just don't want to have to actively wean, so hopefully it tapers off on its own!
honeydew / 7622 posts
@Mamaof2: this is always how I thought I would detetmine how to wean.
I'd like to make it to about 18 months- that's how long my Mom BF me. I think my max is about 2 years. I'll be totally happy if we make it to a year.
honeydew / 7230 posts
@Mamaof2: Haha, DS started doing this outrageously early! He would crawl over when he was 8 months, maybe? Now (almost 1) he walks over and pulls my shirt down, or just motorboats me so I get the point!
pear / 1879 posts
I always thought I had a limit in mind (15 months, 18months) but whenever we reached those goals, it just felt right to keep going. We nursed until just under 24 months and that's when it felt like it was time to be done for us.
nectarine / 2600 posts
@MUI831: same here. But, guess we'll see when the time comes.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I think 3 for me too... He weaned himself at 16 months so I never really found out what I'm comfortable with
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
I used to think 18 months would feel too old... Then C was 18 months and nursing was still working well for us. Now I think 2 would be my max and the point where I would try to actively wean, if she wasn't doing it on her own.
She slowly self weaned at 20 months and that felt right to me.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
I really hope DD decides to wean before she's 2, but that's just for my own sake, not because I think it's too old as a rule. I've been ready to be done since about 15 months but I don't want to force weaning so I'm hanging in there for now.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
For ME personally after age 2. I was willing to go that long before I would wean. But we had to stop at 9 months. I don't really see after 2 as being too old though, more like I would just be so done after that. lol
pomegranate / 3983 posts
Too old? maybe 6. That said, I weaned at 3 because *I* was over it, but I can totally see how LO would have easily kept nursing another year. I think the longer you nurse the easier it is to imagine nursing longer, if that makes sense.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@twodoghouse: " I just don't want to have to actively wean"--that's how I feel! I feel like I've worked so hard for us to have a positive bfing relationship--we started supplementing around 2 months--that now that it's working well why would I push to end nursing now?
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
I am surprised that we are still nursing at 18 months. I feel like I am pretty ready to wean. For me personally, 2 is the cutoff, but I am very supportive of extended breastfeeding and I don't judge others who nurse longer than that.
clementine / 903 posts
I wouldn't judge others, but for me personally definitely age 1 is the cut-off. I know that could change though when LO arrives.
eggplant / 11287 posts
For me, personally, I wouldn't want to nurse beyond 2.5. But for others, I don't think it's a big deal when people nurse to 3 or 3.5.
I nursed my first until 19 months and it didn't feel too old at all. She was still a baby! I nursed my second until 16 months. I would have nursed until 2 if they didn't self-wean.
pineapple / 12053 posts
@daniellemybelle: that is so awesome! i remember how much trouble you had there for a while!
i think for me personally, it would be around 2. LO and I made it 18.5 months and that was good for us!
pineapple / 12793 posts
We made it to 15 months and I could have gone longer.
I think two would be my cut off.
And I'd probably whisper about some one nursing a kindergartner.
honeydew / 7444 posts
When I was nursing I thought 1 year was my max. But then I kept nursing and nursing and weaned her at 20 months. I probably could have continued to the 2 year mark but I wanted my boobs back.
I don't think there is an age that's too old.
pomelo / 5132 posts
I'm not sure. We made it until about 14 months when it became uncomfortable for me because I was pregnant. I think extended BF is great! My goal was a year, and that's the same with this one too.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@birdofafeather: Thanks! It's amazing how time flies and things change once you are out of that little baby stage!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
For me, I wanted to make it to a year and I stopped at 13 months. I was just really tired of not having my body to myself. So not much more than that.
pomelo / 5228 posts
I think 2 or so is my limit, but I highly doubt DS will go that long... I'll be happy if he makes it to 1!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@Baby Boy Mom: great job.
I was going to say 3 but I could see how going until 4 wouldn't be much different. After that I think it's too much.
I'd be happy to make it to 18 months again and probably want to be done around 2.
clementine / 756 posts
Still pregnant, so we'll have to see. I really want to breastfeed but I've had friends who have been absolutely miserable breastfeeding and I've already decided that after a few weeks, it's not worth being miserable. But, if things go well I'm hoping to make it until we can use whole cow's milk, so around a year. After that I'll just have to see if I'm enjoying it and just stop when I'm no longer enjoying it.
pear / 1570 posts
We weaned at 2.5 bc I was pregnant and realy uncomfortable.. Before nursing him I probably would have said two but it was like the longer we nursed the more it was just normal and not 'too old.' I started with boundries pretty young though so there was no shirt pulling or demanding. After about 18mo we only nursed at home/grandparents houses and by two it was just at nap and nighttime unless he was sick.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
I would not want to go beyond 18 months. With DD, she self weaned at 14 month. With the buns currently in the oven I am just hoping that BF twins isn't as crazy as I am imagining it to be and I don't see myself doing that beyond a year.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
Kindergarten age for me personally. My daughter is 14 months, signs milk to ask for it and can lift my shirt if she chooses to, but she still seems like a baby to me!
