The first thing everybody always says when they come to my home for the first time is, "what's with all the plates?" I collect egg plates and have them hanging all over my dining room, which is right by the entryway. I'm sure people think I'm weird for it, but I love them!

If they come in the formal front door, there is a stained glass window just inside and usually people will comment on that if they have never been to our house before. Otherwise - just "hey!"

It is my husband's hobby, and we're down to a manageable number, less than 100 on display right now.

@artbee: they used to be in a tall glass enclosed cabinet, but now they're in plexiglass cases mounted to the wall.

Hopefully "wow it is looking nice" because we have been painting and updating things like crazy since we bought our house a few months ago. My mom is coming for a visit on Wednesday, so I'll find out soon.

It's usually something along the lines of "Well, this is a large room. What do you use it for?"
We live in a 60's ranch house, which my husband remodeled about 6 years ago (before we were married). He and his father insisted on knocking out a wall that made half the damn house into one room. It is the room you first walk into and it is so awkward. We've started trying different furniture set-ups, so it's getting better, but we've even had a good friend who is a decorator come in and get stumped by it. We joke that it's our ballroom. You can literally fit 3 living room sets in the beast.

"Settle down Finley." Our dog gets VERY hyper when the doorbell rings and someone new walks in the door! She's just a little thing (peek-a-poo) but she makes her presence known.

@bree72: Wow, that sounds pretty huge! What do you use it for? It must be great for parties!

@artbee: It really does work awesome for parties, especially since it opens to the kitchen. We actually have people ask to have their parties at our house because it's ideal. We end up hosting things all year.
But for the every day, it currently has one seating area in front of the fireplace, and another by the front window. We don't actually use either one, but again,, they're great conversation areas for parties. I think we're making progress, but there's still so much room to fill.
