My LO 1 likes to sit in stunned silence and stare at her food for 20-30 minutes before she even attempts a bite. Slowest eater ever.
Does your Toddler eat their food right away or do they have to work up to it?

He eats 2 bites, throws 5 bites, eats 1 bite, throws 10 more. It makes me SO confused - He throws the food he likes along with the things he doesn't!

@autumnlove: i LOLed at "stunned silence"! hahahaha!!! I know it's painful for you... sorry for laughing.. but that's so cute.
It really depends what I put in front of them. If it's something like mac and cheese, pasta with meatballs, dumplings, bibimbap, or another favorite they dig in before I can even get their bibs on. But if it's something they don't want to eat, Wagon Jr. just starts complaining, and LMW just leans away from her food and starts whining. Ugh. Usually I resort to bribes (popsicles) and then threats (no popsicle if you don't eat your dinner)

Aww that's cute! LO eats like gangbusters for the first few minutes, then she randomly gets pissed at the food and throws it to the dog. We then ignore her and take all the food away. Then we reintroduce everything back on her plate slowly and she proceeds to eat everything excruciatingly slowly.

@mrs. wagon: Hahhaha, so painful! It doesn't happen when we have french fries, pizza or mac and cheese!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@autumnlove: haha! I guess she's stunned that you dare put anything other than fries, pizza, or mac and cheese in front of her. hehe.

She yells "fak!" if she doesn't have a fork or "towa!" if she doesn't have a paper towel, "mak!" if she doesn't have milk. Then she will eat....for a minute or two. Then it's, "Eet own, mommy or eet own daddy" which means "sit down in mommy or daddy's lap" to finish her meal.

DS expects food immediately if we put him in his high chair and will "yell" at me if I don't feed him fast enough. Once he starts to feel full, he'll start taking food out of his mouth, play with it for a bit, then put it back in his mouth to eat. Once he's full/done eating, he'll take the food out of his mouth and throw it. Yuck.

She is really funny, when we put the plate in front of her, she looks it all over, like what do I want to eat first? Or really what won't I eat? Lately she wants to stand and eat at her learning tower and I am ok with that cause she is eating better. She must have a spoon or fork, and then ends up holding it and eating with her hands.

Eats...throws....eats....throws....stabs violently with fork....pokes with fingers.....eats off my plate.....

An example of a normal night (this was last night):
LO screaming I HUNGRY....I HUNGRY
I set food in front of her, said it's a little hot so eat your watermelon first.
IT'S HOT, It's HOT...for 20 minutes.
"E it's no longer hot you can eat it."
No, I not hungry. I want more melon. I want daddy's plate
No, eat off the plate you have
NO DADDY's PLATE
Transfer food to a plate like daddy's
takes 2 bites..."I full" no you need to eat more.
I DONE
Please eat 2 bites of green beans, 2 bites of pork
NO tries to throw plate
E if you throw the plate you get no snacks and go to bed.
45 minutes later, she finishes her food because she's hungry.
And then I'm exhausted.

She picks up a piece of food, inspects it, then drops it on the floor. Picks up another bit of food and throws it onto the floor. Then she uses her arm to sweep the remaining food onto the floor in one go. Any bits that are remaining, she sweeps at furiously and shouts until the table is clear. Then she uses her feet to push her high chair away from the table. Ugh.

@Cherrybee: my LO does the thing with her feet with her booster seat. Ugh!
persimmon / 1165 posts
T climbs into his booster seat by himself, D cries until I lift him into his. Strap them both in. They then proceed to roll their sippy cups across the table to each other and cry when it falls off the table or I take them away because they're playing with them. Look at the food and then say NO. Throw their forks. More rolling of the sippy cups. D puts his feet up on the table. I say no feet and take them down. He puts them back up. This goes on for several minutes. A new (and gross) development is for D to put his feet in his mouth and watch me or DH to see what we'll do. T will yell, signaling a game to D. Then they yell back and forth for a while, seeing who can screech/yell the loudest, highest. Maybe a couple bites of food have been eaten. The dog walks by ... D cries because he dropped food (on purpose) on the ground and the dog ate it. 20 minutes of all of this in some rotation and I ask them, are you done? NO! Do you want more? NO! A couple more bites get eaten between the two of them and then they finally say "all done" and signal by patting their bellies.
Then I drink wine.

DS chugs his milk and then looks at his food and repulsed, yells at us. Pretty much every night. Ahh, picky eating....

The most difficult part is actually getting my son to the table. Once he's seated, he eats quite neatly. Sometimes, though, he elbows his water cup and spills all over the table.

They usually just sit down and eat. My 4 year old might make faces at the food if she doesn't like what I have cooked. I tell her too bad, eat or starve. She then decides to eat it most of the time.
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@Cherrybee: lol, I had to laugh, we have had many tea times like that.
She eats a bit, leaves the rest unless she can eat it off our plates (because obviously it tastes so much better from a grown up's plate) , asks for mango or berries to devour then tips all her water over her tray, splashes her hands furiously in it so it goes everywhere then demands we sing songs.

@LuLu Mom: I think we have the same toddler! This is my dinnertime to a T.

She jumps into her seat before I've even got food on the plate, then shovels it into her mouth like we've never fed her before.

@yellowbird: It's so hard some nights I just want to be like "FINE EAT THE POPTART" but I resist Last night was a rough dinner, her insistence to use a real plate but still wanting to throw it on the floor gives me a headache.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: haha, Xander does this a lot too! But only if we're giving him his "staples". If I give him something new, he just throws it on the floor or hands it back to me.

4YO stares at food oftentimes, doesn't take first bite until we're nearly done eating. slowwwwww eater. the 21 month old can't get the food fast enough to her, she gobbles it down hungrily. they're both so different from each other.
pomelo / 5469 posts
@Alivoo01: same here! Though the taking food out of her mouth is a relatively new thing...I don't get why she'd put more in in the first place if she's full!
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
I don't think LO is exactly a toddler yet but she just shoves all the food in her mouth, gags, takes some out. Throws some. Sees her tray is empty, screams. Swipes it all off her tray. I put it back. Shove it all in mouth like I starve her all day. Yells because tray is empty. I've noticed that she's started picking out the items she likes better than others &yells when those items are gone. (She's 11.5 months).

@autumnlove: haha omg I'm sorry but I'm laughing visualizing that!
Depending on what's for dinner she'll eat immediately or pick at it first. It's towards the end that she stalls.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@regberadaisy: ha, she stared at the fish for 30 mins. I finally convinced her to take a tiny bite and she actually liked it. So frustrating!

D is 7 and eats. very. slowly. He gets full after 3 bites. Unless it's pizza. Then he eats 3 slices.

I am strangely comforted by how many toddlers throw their food. My guys like doing this the second they are full. When does the throwing STOP?
nectarine / 2667 posts
He rabidly attacks whichever food he likes the most and then spends the next 10 minutes demanding more of THAT food - even though there is other food he likes on his plate. (The fun part is we Never Know what food he will choose. Monday it's steak, but Thursday it's rice and steak is a hot turd.) After that he checks in on how close my husband and I are to being "all done" so he can get down. Thankfully he's stopped throwing things. Mostly.
