@JustlikeHeaven: I'd start looking for another job while you're on maternity leave.

I don't get any official paid maternity leave either. Do you have a short-term disability policy? How about accrued sick time or PTO? I'm getting paid throughout my maternity leave through a combination of those three things. Also, do you pay into the CA state disability insurance? Then I think you're eligible to get paid by the state during some number of weeks of maternity leave. (Same goes for your spouse btw, since it covers paternity leave too...)

My job isnt going to pay me for my time off either. It is very disheartening that this is even legal, but such is life in America. I will try to apply for short term disability. hopefully I qualify for it

That's what happened to me. I'm in CA, too, but worked for a larger organization. I couldn't do anything about it besides not returning to that job.

@JustlikeHeaven: we are able to operate on just DH's income, that's how I am able to stay home, so we didn't save any extra money. I didn't find programs to apply to, but will admit I probably could have looked harder.

wow. he sounds stingy. and i think my husband would totally understand where he's coming from.

see if he could set you up with a short-term disability plan. although if you're pregnant not, not sure if they'll cover if you became pregnant after you got the policy. they'll pay 60% of your salary.

i would definitely find another job. i mean, that job is better than no job, but it's still really bad!

I had no maternity leave either (I work as an independent contractor). We saved up ahead of time...we looked into short term disability but it didn't make sense to do it that way.

Just an fyi about short term disability - you have to be paying into the system for at least 30 days before you get pregnant for them to cover your pregnancy. At least that's the ones I have run into!
