We have the Dohm Marpac sound machine...just white noise but it drowns out everything and we take it with us everywhere!

We have regular plain white noise- sounds like a fan I would say. I read in a couple of places that loud continuous noise like that is better than sounds like waves or rain forest. Whether it's true or not I don't know.

But some white noise is absolutely essential since we live in the city. Another tip- put the sound machine in between baby and source of potential disturbance noise- so if you are worried about something outside like a neighbors dog out it between baby and window; if you are worried about household noise, place between baby and door.

We just have the radio tuned to static. Works great!

@kiddosc: I have an app on my phone that sounds like static- DH won't use it and says "it sounds like death". LO never minded!

We have a white noise machine with 10 sounds but I have it on "white noise". Sounds like static to me. I crank it up loud. I always put her sleep sheep to "ocean" when we are out and about.

@Foodnerd81: We had a sound machine that we had set on heartbeat when he was little, but eventually we switched it over to static and it's just easier to use that because we can tune into radio static wherever we are.

Waterfall if we have to use our phones, and just a static noise if we're using our Timex machine.
