So with DH who is our main chef of the house being a bit messy plus almost 3 kids and a dog, I'm always nervous about keeping white surfaces clean. I feel like I'm always wiping off the knobs of our cabinets or drops of stuff from the counters.
I love the look of crisp white in the kitchen but not sure if I would prefer to have white cabinets or white counters. White counters would not be marble but some other surface material.

Definitely cabinets. We are forever wiping our counters down, especially cooking with kids. We're a family that loves to cook from scratch and with the kids! The white cabinets get dirty for sure but nothing a quick wipe down doesn't get rid of. Counters will get constant mess whereas cabinets are more a splash here and there.

We live in a rental with white cabinets and white countertops (not sure what the material is, but hard like a stone, not laminate). it really isn't too bad to keep clean--the only thing we've really worried about in terms of leaving a stain is red wine, so we try to keep a dish under open red wine bottles. We've live in our apt for a year now and it still looks very clean. That said, we also aren't worried about long term wear and tear since it's a rental and we'll prob only live there 2 more years max
ETA dh is a big cook and the kitchen def gets messy! but nothing a quick wipe down doesn't fix

We have white cabinets with white and grey quartz countertops that resemble marble. Because of the grey veining on the white countertops, it really doesn't look that dirty. Quartz can be pricier than marble but it is really a great option in a house with kids, messy cooks, etc.

White countertops are the worst. We had them and actually had them resurfaced because they were TERRIBLE.

I like the look of both (white cabinets with a darker counter or darker cabinets with a white counter). I guess in my mind I would think we have to wipe down the counters anyways. But we definitely go longer between wiping down the cabinets. I cleaned the cabinets this weekend and although to the regular eye they didn't look bad, up close they were pretty gross. I'm afraid white cabinets would show the dirt to the naked eye very easily.

@T.H.O.U.: Yeah, I don't clean my cabinets that often, but the countertop I constantly wipe.
I wouldn't get white laminate, but white solid surface that's not porous, sure.

I have cabinets and the only ones that really need to be wiped is the ones closest to our stove top since oil/grease can splash on them. Have had my white cabinets for 3 years and they still look great with a dog and a kid so far!

We have white corian countertops, white tile backsplash, white appliances plus the walls/ceiling are painted white in our kitchen! They are actually pretty easy to keep clean, it's easy to spot the stains and I like how fresh it all looks. I make a baking soda/vinegar paste which works well on any lingering stains.

I love black speckled countertops w/white background for hiding dirty counters. We had those in one apartment and I was always surprised when I wiped them down how dirty they were 
I would definitely not willingly put in white countertops in my kitchen.

We have quartz white countertops with hints of gray (I got it because it looked closest to marble without being marble)... and I find it VERY easy to keep clean.
We also have white cabinets, some new (that go along with the new quartz counter) and some old... The older white cabinets are harder to keep clean as they were painted white. its easy to wipe them down but they're showing signs of aging.

We have dark cabinets with white quartz counter tops and white back splash. I just wipe down the counter tops, and the maintenance hasn't been bad.
