I learned that you can have too many pairs of shoes! I went way overboard with LO 1 so I am more practical with LO 2! She can't wear any of the hand me downs yet because they have different feet....extra wide/wide and extra narrow. LO 2 has one pair that fits right now and one pair to grow into.

Never buy clearance for next year because 1) it never fits or 2) you forget about it/lose it and it doesn't get worn.

For older kids : let them pick out their own clothes! I bought DS a ton of shirts on clearance last year and he hated them all..... lesson learned - this year I took him with me and let him choose!

I learned that at potty training time, you have to go with pants you can pull up and down, no zippers or buttons. Way limits the amount of pants one can buy for a boy.
I also overbought on shoes, and snow boots were a thumbs down for us.

Also, I obviously cannot judge how fast, or slowly she grows...so I've stopped buying further ahead than the coming season.

Don't bother buying too many seasons ahead, you don't know how fast your kids will grow or if they'll be in that size for the right season. There are sales ALL THE TIME.

Don't bother stocking up because kids grow at such different rates that nothing ever fits in the right season.
Soak all clothes with stains right away!
Oxyclean is my best friend.

That everything is just going to get stained and dirty anyway, so don't spend too much.
Don't buy stuff that's white.
Don't buy things you have to iron. Ain't nobody got time to iron an infant's clothes. -

@Mrs. High Heels: This is one I'm learning right now. We got a bunch of hand me down 2T stuff. It'll last him until about Christmas, then we'll rely on 3T stuff. It feels like he's already growing out of the 2T stuff and he turns two in two days!

@looch: Along those lines... don't buy rompers around the time you plan on potty training (learned that the hard way - bought some cute rompers that season that only got worn a handful of times... sigh)! The last thing you want to do is struggle with buttons when they're about to pee their pants.

@grizz: so much yes to no white clothes! My MiL is obsessed with buying e white clothes - beautiful all white pants, lovely all white sweaters. I always bite my tongue not to say "maybe you haven't noticed but LO is a TODDLER!" Jeez, I don't even trust myself not to stain white clothes, let alone a 2 year old.

Haha my LO only has two pairs of shoes! Crocs and tennis shoes. The tennis shoes were a gift.
I learned - buy cheap clothes and let them play in the mud. No need to tell them not to mess up their clothes!

Denim sucks.
It sucks to put it on them, it sucks to take it off them, and it is not comfortable for them to run around in.

As soon as I buy stuff in her size or one size up, she will grow two sizes in a month. We got a bunch of stuff for her birthday that I'm going to have to exchange for the next size.

To buy used! They grow so fast and if they ruin something it's not so hard on the wallet. We do buy them new things but usually only on sale

@yoursilverlining: @grizz: I actually LOVE white stuff because I will just use a 1/4 cup of bleach in the wash and they always come out sparkly clean, whereas I can't do the same for colored items! LO has many white polos because of this. I also try to keep all his onesies white (especially FF days) so I can use bleach

Definitely need way more pj's than anything else.
I prefer my babies to be comfy rather than wear a cute outfit so a lot of the non onsie/pj's go unused when they are tiny.
Take hand me downs and just fill in where you need! Usually pj's, white onsies as undershirts, socks, and shoes.
I am so sad about the clothes that still fit DS1 but he can't wear now that he's potty training. Meaning don't buy or get attached to onsies, overalls, rompers, etc once they get close to that age.

I definitely have no self control. It's a good thing he's a boy, because I feel like there's much less cute stuff for boys than girls. But still. DS has way too many clothes. And I can justify every single purchase

1) Never buy clothes with ruffles! Ruffles are the devil! They are impossible to iron! I have to use the hair straighteners on them!!!
2) Buy everything a size too big because DH WILL tumble dry it and it WILL shrink.

@Weagle: Hahaha I love that I said this yesterday and then last night there was a Gap dress on clearance that only came in the next size up and it was too cute to pass up, so I figured it was worth the gamble
