We recently visited Woodstock New York, and had a great two-day getaway with the kids. It was a lot of fun, which was a surprise - we're used to using our vacation time to visit family, which isn't always relaxing.
Any ideas on other places we could stay, within 2-3 hours of car from NYC? I was thinking, maybe North Fork (wine country in Long Island)... although there's not too much nature around there, I think? Not sure.

Central PA - you have Lancaster, with the Amish farms and outlet shopping, Hershey, with Hershey Park and Chocolate World and more outlet shopping (ha), Harrisburg, with the state capital and City Island and a Minor League baseball team... All of that's a lot for a weekend, but you could certainly do a weekend in each town!

We just came back from rocking horse ranch. Kids are three and they loved it. I think it would be great for Charlie's age. Bit expensive though.

I liked the north fork a lot, but haven't been with kids. We went kayaking around shelter island which was really nice! We were there for a wedding.

I was also going to suggest Hershey PA (fun for kids, chocolate, and great spa for grown ups!). And I think not too far away is the crayola factory, which I've never been to but want to go!

Bear mountain and storm king art center, mohonk mountain, dia beacon, fire island - all close by and fun with kids.

Mohonk is awesome but try to do it mid-week to save money. I'll echo Poconos and North Fork. The wineries in North Fork are fun and some seemed kid-friendly (kontokoska in particular). Lake George and Saratoga are more like 4 hours but awesome in the summer.

We really liked going to Naraganset (sp?), RI. We mostly just liked camping and fishing in the catskills or the jim thorpe, pa area. This was all prekids though. There's a place my husband's brother's families really like in the poconos. It's an inexpensive lodge with some nice outdoor activities. Their kids seemed to have a lot of fun there.

Sesame Place is a reasonable drive, we haven't done it yet, but are planning to this summer. Connecticut has some nice things to do, it's not much of a beach destination, but Kent Falls is pretty.
