I'm going to go with penis and vagina, while I know vulva is the correct term, vagina is more well known.

My dh was trying really hard to teach lo to say ball-sack tonight on the changing table because he thinks it would be hilarious luckily lo is too young to know better. Haha

Seriously though, we are going with penis/vagina. Even though vulva is more anotomically correct, i feel llike it is used less commonly...we will go into more detail at an older age.

We're going with penis/vagina. We only have a little boy now though. I've heard teaching the correct terms can help if your child is being molested.

Not sure what to call girl parts yet, and with two boys hopefully I'll have a while to decide! I've just said that boys have penises and girls don't.

We plan to start with the generic "privates" and bottom and, when DD is old enough to really understand, teach her the proper names.

Per usual, I feel like the 12-year-old boy of the group. I call it his weenis.

Penis/vagina is what we tell her. A few days ago I told her I needed to wipe her during a diaper change and she said "Wipe vanina! Okay!" I almost died. LOL. Didn't realize she had caught on to that.

We use "important places" and front bum / back bum for now.

Puffy chucky, maybe?

Just kidding. I honestly don't know. At this point we just call it her "privacy." She initiated that term and it kind of stuck.

@Keppa: Hahaha that's hilarious! I'm sure that makes the most sense to him. My DD tries to comb my hair...

I don't have anything to contribute to this other than a funny story....

The doctor wanted to do a full physical on my youngest nephew...and he turned to my sister at just under 3 years old saying "She's not touching my balls!"

My funny story:
I was babysitting my nieces and nephews for a weekend and suggested we go birdwatching. They flipped out and I couldn't figure out why. Apparently my Aunt and Uncle told my nieces and nephews that their parts were called "birds."

We're using penis/vagina/bum. Just trying to get her used to the words at 14 months. The other day she saw my husband's penis, pointed to it and said "dada!" Then looked for one on her (as she's been obsessed with pointing out my belly button and then hers) and said "dada??"

@Kemma: I thought my Dh was the only one who used the term "front bumm" (well in his case he says front butt but same difference). But he actually doesn't is it for dd, just in general. So mature.

So far we alternate with vagina, junk, or bits (um... As in sh!tty bits, during extra special diaper changes.). We should probably work on that now that she is starting to pick up on more of what we say.

@catomd00: I was only thinking teaching them as private words because I have a little boy and even if those words are normalized in our home they aren't in our society. I can see it becoming an issue in the preschool/early elementary years where they would be used inappropriately for shock value.

@catomd00: As I said, I have no problem personally with her using the correct terms in public, but I'm trying to be respectful of other parents sensitivities. A lot of parents would be mortified if my child was yelling "Penis!" at the playground, so I want to be cognizant of that.
Unfortunately, our culture has not progressed to the point where everyone sees the words penis or vulva the same way as they see ears or nose. That's evident by the fact that many adults still don't use the anatomical words. It shouldn't be this way, but it is.

I also don't want my child to use those words and see a reaction of shock or be "shushed", which is likely to happen if she uses them in public. At home I can control the reaction and maintain that they are positive, normal words.
