I think I was in 3rd grade and my brother was in 6th when my mom stopped reading to us together-- she was reading dickens to us and we got bored, haha. But by then we were pretty voracious independent readers

A lot of parents stop when kids start reading themselves, but the benefits to reading to your kids continue long after thay can read! I will read to lo as long as he will let me reasonably, probably 2nd or 3rd grade. Then i hope we will be able to choose books to read together, book club style discussing books is good for kids forever!

This may sound crazy but my Dad read books like The Hobbit to the whole family well into middle school (my oldest sister may have been in high school). Then a few years ago I was seriously ill and sedated in the hospital for a long time and he brought books to read me there!

@Little Misters Mom: @cmomma17: Mine too, and I think I was middle school age? I know my mom read to us till at least middle school.

I stopped reading to D last year. He was in 1st grade. He was learning to read so he read to me. This year he prefers to read to himself before bed.

Now I read to M.

I plan to read to my kids as long as they'll let me! Once they can reason their own, I will still read harder chapter books to them.

@Little Misters Mom: our teacher read the hobbit to use during a reading break in middle school! changed the voices and all!

i hope to do family reading into middle school. DH and i used to read outloud to each other when we carpooled!

My 4 year old is a reader, but she still loves the time I spend reading to her. I remember my mom reading to us into our Tweens

I think my dad read to me until around 3rd grade? but I'd love to read out loud before bed as a family till forever.... so many good books out there!

I have friends whose families did this until they were in their late teens -- and still do when they get together for holidays! just thinking about it makes me happy

I remember taking turns reading chapter books with my brother and parents. I'm not sure when we stopped. Maybe 4th grade?

I have very fond early memories of both of my parents reading to me. But I was an early reader and I think they stopped reading to me around 5 because I enjoyed reading by myself.

My parents read to me until I was in my middle years of elementary school. I honestly still love listening to a story, thank you audiobooks!

As a teacher, I read aloud to high school students from time to time and I am always amazed at how they visibly relax. Although I suppose having your parents read to you before bed when your in high school would be a little odd ha ha! I think the reason for stopping would be a combination of children's age and the fact that life just gets busier sadly. I think maybe we do it in different ways once they are older though. Like reading a snippet of a news story out loud and then talking about it.

As for my little ones, I will continue as long as they will listen

I was in 5th (I read on my own too) but my school had a reward program to encourage parents to read to their child and the child to read to the parent for 30 minutes each night.

Now that I'm a parent the idea of my dad reading in the hospital is equal parts sweet and sad to me because I realize how scared and helpless they must have felt and somehow reverting to the days when a story made things better was all he could think to do.

Our eldest is 10 and he asked me to stop reading to him about a year or so ago. He is a fantastic reader and loves reading anything (He's in the middle of the 5th Harry Potter). He did say to me the other day "S, do you remember when you used to read to me? You were so good at it". I'm not sure if he was asking me to maybe read to him again? Maybe I will try.

Our middle boy, 7, has never had the patience to sit and listen, he's too busy. So we stopped with him probably far sooner than we should have.

I read to L every day, multiple times, and I don't ever want to stop.
