LO has always had an occasional cough that we've gotten pretty used to. Lately he's seemed so dramatic about it that we've looked at each other and rolled our eyes about what a drama queen he is becoming. Today though we're wondering if there's something we're ignoring...I've been asked so many times by specialists if he's been sick lately and I feel like a dumb mom for saying "um...not that I know of". But I don't want to be paranoid either. So where do you draw the line between normal baby cough and knowing they're sick?

If it's continuous (may mean there's drainage) or wet sounding.

My ped says 2 weeks. I think at that point it's always good to let them hear it themselves.

It's so hard to tell with little kids. I've had DS wall around with a cough I was sure would go away, only to end up with fever... but he's also had nasty coughs that lasted a couple of weeks, and were just from teething.
It might actually be reflux related... my husband had a bad cough last winter that went on and on, and we were sure it's an infection, but it was reflux meds that finally cleared it up.

I was so sure it was attention-seeking and the women who came over for an EI meeting yesterday said so too...and today he is inconsolable and his nose is running. I think I'm just the worst judge of whether babies are sick.

@spaniellove: I think I would get it checked out if it has been going on for a couple of weeks. Also probably unrelated, but DH has asthma and I would def describe his cough as "attention seeking" sounding, though I know it isn't!

@spaniellove: We had a cough that lingering for a long time and only seem to happen at bedtime. For the longest time it didn't seem like a big deal and then it just was "different." It's impossible to know for sure, but since you now have one more thing to add...you might as well get a second opinion.
(I think the cough I described was nothing, but soon after, he and I both got whooping cough...things just change.)
