Who is dealing with a dairy intolerance or MSPI?

@anandam: I'm sorry you're going through all this! I remember going through something similar and it was awful. Yes, I did get some pressure from family to switch to formula. At one point, I straight out asked my pediatrician if LO would be better off on the formula and she said that breastfeeding might possibly still be better than formula but definitely not worse. So I told that to my family and they seemed appeased. We recently reached my goal of 12 months breastfeeding so now family is on my case again but I have gotten to the point where it is easy just to brush them off.

I definitely agree with @gilmoregirl too in treating the baby. I got obsessed with the poops because my LO's poop always tested positive for blood (even after I was on a crazy strict elimination diet for months) but she seemed happy and healthy so at a certain point, my pediatrician told me to stop eliminating new foods and just stick with what we were doing.

@anandam: I've gotten, and still get, a lot of pressure to switch to formula from my family. What actually helped me was that she reacted to wheat when she directly ingested it. That showed them that she wasn't reacting to *me*, but to the food. That is so tough

@gilmoregirl: @catlady: I so appreciate the supportive words of wisdom! He is otherwise well and thriving and growing, which is why my pediatrician hasn't been too worried, but as a mama looking at all these bloody diapers, it's hard not to feel awful. It's exactly as @LovelyPlum: said, feels like somehow *I'm* to blame, like I'm what's bad for him. But it's so helpful to have you all to remind me not to lose sight of the forest for the trees.

Found this article yesterday that really spelled it out clearly - http://www.bfmed.org/Media/Files/Protocols/Protocol24_English_120211.pdf

For those of you who've "graduated" when did you reintroduce dairy? DD is 8 months soon and I'm wanting to try some hidden diary in a cookie or something, but I'm worried it's too soon. At her 6 month appointment her doctor said we could try, which could be right, but honestly her doctor doesn't seem to know much about MSPI based on my conversations with her so I'm curious what other's have been advised to do.

@fussygal: I'm curious about this, too. There is a part of me that wonders if we should start by giving it to her directly. That way, if she reacts poorly, my milk is still safe. Then again, we're not going to try again for a while, because she's shown signs of still having it if I slip up. Sending you so much !

@hellobear: I'm so sorry I missed your original post! How are you and your LO doing? My LO also had congestion and has GERD as well. I hope that things are improving.

@LovelyPlum: oh going directly is a good call - I didn't think about that!

The advice I followed was to reintroduce soy first (we did this right at six months) then dairy if soy went well. We introduced it through me eating it. I was really nervous to eat dairy normally bc even if one thing was fine, I was concerned about a cumulative effect. I started with "hidden" dairy, then yogurt, then cheese. Again, this was just my diet.

At Ben's last GI appointment we were told I should continue to eat a regular diet. They recommended (and his ped agreed) that we should wait until 9 months to give any dairy to Ben. At that time, we will do the same - processed dairy, baked dairy, yogurt, cheese. He's not to try cows milk before one.

To be clear though, this is just our plan based on our symptoms and our comfort level. Ben's GI has always emphasized doing what we personally are comfortable with and that's influenced the advice we've received.

@gilmoregirl: Thanks! That's really helpful. Maybe I'll Try soy now, and just wait until the end of the year when she has her nine month appointment and see what her doctor recommends.

@fussygal: My LO is 16 months and we still haven' introduced dairy and I'm only introduced soy oil and lecithin.

My GI doctor advised for us to wait until 18 months and try something at that point because around 13 months, LO got a friend's cheese puff and ate 1 (!) and had black tarry stools for 2 days straight. So.....it still doesn't agree with her system at all, and it made me gun shy to try more.

@fussygal: I started introducing some baked dairy into my diet about a month ago at 12.5 months. So far she seems ok but I've been hesitant to introduce more because she keeps getting mild eczema and I can't figure out if it's diet or weather related (since it has gotten cold and dry recently). I am hoping to try yogurt or cheese (!!!) soon. We have not given any dairy to LO yet and I'm not sure when we will try but maybe sometime after Thanksgiving. We tried soy at around 10 or 11 months and she had a clear reaction so we have been waiting a bit on trying again.

Our pediatrician said most kids grow out of it around 12 months, although I think LO was pretty sensitive so it may take a bit longer for us than for others.

@fussygal: Just one thing I will add...I was super worried when I tested things, because I really wasn't sure what to look for symptom-wise, so I was definitely overanalzying every single spit up. I was told to look only for the same reaction we had in the first place, which in our case was slimy green poop with blood in it. Because he hasn't had another instance of that since his diapers cleared up back in August, we appear to be in the clear. I don't think he was terribly sensitive to begin with, if at all, so our case might not line up with others' experiences.

Anyway, good luck to you! I was so excited to eat dairy again, but it actually kinda turns my stomach now, so I've let some of my different eating habits stick.

Oh, and thanks to @LovelyPlum:, I've been turned on to the So Delicious coconut milk holiday flavors, and the chocolate mint is currently rocking my world. Thanks for the tip on those!

@Anagram: Oh man! Just one puff?! Crazy.

@catlady: crossing my fingers you get some cheese soon!

@gilmoregirl: The symptom spotting is my big worry, too! She was spitting up a TON and her poops were slimy and green but since we I tried solids two months ago she only poops every 7-10 days and they are kinda weird. So either it would be super obvious or really hard to tell.
