A nice plush fleece is great for cold days.

Swaddling blankets are awesome for so many things. We still use them from time to time in our house with our almost 2.5 year old. We have the muslin ones. ETA: our lo uses them now to cover her "babies".

Are you having a shower? We were gifted lots of receiving blankets at my shower. They are very soft blankets that we used for a short period of time. I ended up cutting them up and making them into washcloth size for nose blowing.

I haven't used any of our receiving blankets. I would definitely skip those. As an aside, usually your hospital says you can take whatever is in the room -- I took all of their blankets and they are pretty much a less cute version of receiving blankets.

Blankets seem to be the go-to gift that people give. I regret registering for any blankets! We use the swaddle muslin blankets the most, but have one thick blanket we keep in my husband's car for morning drop-off.

I definitely would hold off on buying any blankets until after your shower if you are having one. I had a spring baby & was gifted many blankets. I would guess people shopping for a winter baby will be even more tempted to buy blankets!

I use the A&A swaddle blankets for a lot of things, long after he outgrew being swaddled in them- car seat or stroller shade on sunny days or when she fell asleep, nursing cover, light blanket to shade bare legs in the summer, lay down on the floor in a pinch... Plus most of them are really pretty. I got one four pack and it was plenty.

Warm plush blankets- one or two for the car or stroller is nice.

I got a ton of handmedowns receiving blankets. I used them more than I expected- lay one flat user us in bed when I'm nursing (she used to dribble a lot, saved on changing my sheets), lay on top of the nursing pillow... I guess mostly I used them as a barrier for her bodily fluids on things that were annoying to wash. I could have done this with any blanket but since these were thin and I had a ton, they worked well.

But I would say other than pickin out a pretty pattern of the A&A blankets that you like, don't register for them because people love to give blankets and you will have more than enough.

My friend gave me a lot of receiving blankets that she used with her son. I actually cut them up and used them as burp rags. DS was a spitter.

I have a 9 month old, and I still don't know what receiving blankets even are. Maybe I own some, but who knows. Anyway, I used muslin blankets as swaddles, nursing covers, stroller/carseat covers and plush blankets to keep warm in chilly weather.
