If your parents or your in-laws decided they wanted to take your LOs (and maybe your LOs' cousins) on a cross country roadtrip for a couple weeks to see some National State Parks? Assume your kids are around 12 at the time they want to do this. Would you be okay with this plan? Why or why not?

I think I would be ok with it at that age - but ask me again when my kids are actually at that age

If it were during the summer and/or didn't interfere with school, I would be okay with it. My son, on the other hand, no idea if he'd be okay with it.

Yeah, I'd be okay with it if they are around 12, sure. I'm just jealous that I don't get to go!!

I wouldn't be, but ask me again in 11 years and I might be singing a different tune if I have a moody pre-teen in my house.
I say no now because that's something I'd like to share with LO. I traveled a lot with my parents as a kid and those are my best childhood memories. So I want to have that kind of experience with my LO. My family/ILs could tag along though!

As long as the people in charge were responsible adults, sure (so never with my inlaws).
It would also depend if my child wanted to do it! I encourage travel and at that age I would encourage more independence. I bet they'd make some great memories!

My uncle brought all his nieces & nephews out to Chicago (where he lived) for our 13th birthdays. My parents let me go!

At age 12, absolutely. I think by age 8-10 you should be old enough for sleep away camp, so I would assume by age 12 you are probably in better hands with grandparents then just a camp. But this is also assuming grandparents are in good health, safe drivers, etc.

Yeah. I let my parenta take DS to disney world back in february. It was a nice break.

Absolutely. So long as they wanted to go I think it would be a great experience & nice to have that bonding time with their grandparents.

The IL's I would have to wait and see how they are with R when she gets older. Right now they don't seem comfortable with her so no. -
If she wanted to at that age, sure! Right now I can't imagine it but I'm sure that'll change in 11 years.

As long as she wanted to go I would definitely let her go with my parents. Hhheeelllllll no to my in laws, M would probably come back to me as a chain smoker.

I'd want to go too! Other than that, I think I would be okay with it. Although, I'd feel more comfortable with my parents; just b/c I know my in-laws won't travel like that anyway.

@Adira: This has come up before on the boards, and personally I would be fine with it after even 5 years old. BUT I trust both my in-laws and my own mom 100% with our LO. They are both very careful, responsible, etc.
My mom has "Camp Nana" (her name for it) every summer where she tries to get all her grandkids together (she has 8 now!) for either a trip or just a week or two at her house. She lives in a planned community with tennis courts, movie theater, pools with slides, etc. If she does the trip, she breaks it into waves with the younger kids on one trip and the older kids on another. One year, she took 4 grandkids on a 2 week trip to a few beaches and D.C. to see all the historical sites. All the grandkids had matching "Camp Nana" shirts and they all loved it.
My siblings really look forward to having a mini vacation from the kids and love letting my mom do this. I can't wait till our LO is old enough to go without us, too! This year, we are going for Camp Nana, but obviously we will also stay since LO will be 1.

I would want to go too but just because I love those types of trips! Aside from that I definitely would as long as my kid was up for it, frankly I would probably really try to convince them to go even if they were on the fence for some reason. It would be a great chance for them to get to know their grandparents in a way they can't with only a few short visits a year.

I never had a good relationship with my grandparents, so I'd love for my kids to have good bonding time with theirs. -

Yep. My grandma and grandpa took me for two weeks each summer starting when I was about 8.

If any of our parents could handle the kids at that point, sure. I don't really see something like this ever really happening though!

I would love that! DH actually went on a trip like that with his grandparents around age seven, and he still talks about it.
That said, if it were his mom and stepdad, no way. His mom, yes. Stepdad, no. DH refers to him as "Mom's husband." Wants no official relationship. He is borderline crazy and we suspect he's using. Not sure what.

My kids' grandparents aren't really up to that kind of driving but if it weren't for that, DEFINITELY!! And I'd say as young as 7 or 8 years old.

In theory, yes. When my LO is 12, my in-laws will be 80ish, so I'm not sure if I would be totally comfortable with that.
