I have a 17mo who probably weighs about 31 lbs. (He was 30 lbs when I got on the scale with him several weeks ago.)

He was 33.2 inches at his 15mo checkup.
ETA: He was 28.8 lbs at that checkup.

No advice because I'm in the opposite situation - 17 months on Friday and my son just barely tops 22lbs. Everything I've read (and I've read a lot - too much - since my son has barely eaten anything in the past week) says that children are very good at self-regulating. If you are offering healthy food at meals and snacks and letting him eat until he is full, he is getting what he needs. Maybe speak to your GP about switching to 2% milk from whole if you are really worried? In terms of food though, he should be setting the pace.

Definitely seems like a topic for your 18 mo appt but I agree that if you're not feeding him crap he's probably fine.

My son is huge. I can't remember exactly but I think he was right about that size at 18 months. Now at almost 3 he's over 40 lbs. Our doctor has never been concerned. He's just a big kid - 95th+ percentile for both height and weight. I ask the doctor at every appt if I should be concerned that he's too big and she laughs. He eats very healthy and he's very active.

@ScarletBegonia: @Mae: @SeptMomma12: Thanks. His diet is pretty good. We don't feed him any junk at home -- he does love fruit, but he eats plenty of other stuff too -- and the worst part of his diet is probably the fact that he eats fries about once per week when we go to our favorite local cafe. I will ask at his checkup in a few weeks.
I was inspired to post because he had already had dinner before we got home from work last night, and then right before his bedtime my husband fed him some of our dinner. Granted, my husband's bolognese is AMAZING so I can't really blame him for his enthusiasm

I'd say that your doctor will tell you if there's reason to worry. At 18 months, some babies are still chunky ... and they're really starting to develop preferences. Chances are, it'll all change within the year (we're at the "everything gets thrown on the floor" phase now).
As long as he's eating a rainbow of foods (all different colors), minimal junk, lots of whole foods, I'd say you can't overfeed.
If you're concerned that he's eating too fast, you could let him self-feed, but regulate the speed at which you're giving him the food.
All of that said, I stand by my first point: your doc will say something if it's a problem.

I wouldn't worry unless the doctor is concerned or he isn't meeting his milestones. Both of my sons are big and pretty always have been. I'm talking 95%+ for weight and 50% to 75%+ for height. But that's just them! You can't always go by the number either. Some kids are just solid! One day someone posted a link on HB to a BMI calculator for toddlers. When I input DS1's info, it said he was obese. But he isn't at all. He actually looks slimmer now more than ever.
