@winniebee: I should, but I'm petrified of him choking. I think since he's a peanut I'm insanely crazy about something happening to him.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@littlek: I had major choking fears too. But, then I figured that the daycare ladies were probably more qualified to administer CPR/heimlich than me! We took it slowly but once we saw how well he did, we got a little more adventurous.

@littlek: I second what @winniebee said!! The ladies at daycare feed kids all day every day, they are more practices than my husband or I. I send the smallest bits of food to daycare now (at 8.5 months). She gets things like beef stew (meat, potatoes, carrots, all cut into teeny bits the size of her thumb), scrambled eggs cut into the same size bits. If M won't pick them up, daycare will pick them up for her and offer them to her or put them on a spoon.
I've just started feeling more comfortable with puffs, they scared me for a while because they're so big!! Feeding is scary but I'm trying to get over it and just doing what "feels" right which is feeding her teeny bits and then as time goes on, feeding bigger bits.

DS is 18 mo. No dietary concerns. He eats pretty much anything I send. Today's lunch is: Applegate chicken and apple sausage, sautéed broccoli, seasoned udon noodle, colby jack cheese, and strawberries. The teachers still heat food in the microwave so he eats most items warmed.

@T-Mom: Yum. I just bought some apple chicken sausage for LO to try this week!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@T-Mom: ooh good idea on the udon noodles! A good staple to keep in the fridge for her.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@T-Mom: Yum! What kind of seasoning did you use on the udon?
honeydew / 7488 posts
@regberadaisy: @autumnlove: The udon noodle is a godsend. I try not to think about how an unopened package can last so long in the fridge?? I found an organic brand at Costco one time which I liked, but last time I went I couldn't find it. I seasoned it with sesame oil, chicken broth, and soy sauce. DS will eat anything with sesame oil on it

Cheddar cheese, broccoli and peas, chicken and rice. Yes, she eats all of that for lunch, plus a 2oz puree if she wants it.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Chicken stir fry with rice, bread, and rigatoni with neatsauce (repeat!!). Not pictured - breakfast of oatmeal/fruit, avacado snack and 4 oz jar of spinach/potatoes "snack". Piggy.

This is our first bento!!!! We're using the Nibble Tray too, and it's pretty awesome for this stage. She will be 1 on Sunday.
Both ends have a turkey+pork+beef+quinoa+zuchini meatball, then we have mini banana pieces, raspberries, broccoli and kamut puffs. In the 'leaves' will be hummus and almond yogurt.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@prettylizy: great!! we jut got this too! I don't have a little cooler big enough yet I haven't done one.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@winniebee: we're lucky in that she is going to be at a day home about 2 minutes from our front door, so she will keep it in the fridge and it will last just fine during our 'commute'
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@prettylizy: mmm yummy! What are kamut puffs?
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@regberadaisy: well, they are a grain (a wheat I think) that has been puffed up (a la Rice Crispies) to make them cereal-esque. I'm pretty sure Sugar Crisp cereal is just sugary puffed kamut. I like them as a puff type snack that have no added sugar or preservatives. We also buy brown rice puffs and sort of mix it up. I like Nature's Path brand.

@prettylizy: Ooh, that's what we gave LO when we started out with finger foods. I preferred it over cheerios because it had no sugar or salt! She went crazy over it.
LO is almost 11 months.
Tomorrow's lunch: broccoli-cheddar nuggets (from today's blog post), roasted yams, plain black beans, steamed zucchini, and pasta shells (that i will add some pesto to). Blueberries are in another container.

These have been so much fun to look at! You've inspired me to pick up some bento supplies for my LO. Do you feed bento's to your LO's at home too?
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@winniebee: do you have a recipe for your meat sauce? I'd like to make some and freeze it for her. I usually just use jar sauce but figure it has too much salt in it for now.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@betsyboop: I just put different things on her tray, I don't put everything into the silicone cups when we're home. Also, I thought I'd mention, I actually didn't buy anything specifically for her lunch bag. I just took some of the silicone cups we already had and fit them into a tupperware container I already owned. Worked out well.

Hamburger bun pieces, egg, string cheese, grapes and sloppy joe filling!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@mediagirl: It's easy!
- Dice 1 large yellow onion and sautee in generous amount of olive oil in large pot
- In separate big bowl, take two 14 oz cans of hunts whole peeled tomatoes and blend with a hand mixer but still leave some chunks (ie, not totally smooth)
- Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, italian seasoning to taste (I think I use McCormack)
- Add tomatoes to the onions and simmer for at least 30 minutes
- For meat sauce, I just brown 1 lb ground beef in a separate pan, drain it, add it to the sauce and let simmer for 30+ minutes
** Sometimes I make plain and freeze 1/2 and then later add the meat to the sauce b/c we don't always feel like meat sauce : )
** You can double the amount of tomatoes and do 2 onions for a large double batch - I did that on Monday and took 1/3 and froze plain. 1/3 plain sauce and set aside. 1/3 made meat sauce for dinner (which was enough for dinner plus leftovers).
** Another variation of the sauce is, once completed set aside. In large pan, sautee 3-4 cloves garlic. Add sauce. Add cream. Sautee salmon in olive oil/salt/pepper and when cooked, break into chunks, add salmon to sauce and simmer for a few minutes.

@autumnlove: That box holds a good amount of food - what's the brand?
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@mediagirl: What bento box are you using? it looks like a good option for me as a newbie.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@winniebee: It isn't labelled...but it was $3 at a Japanese market. I'll pick one up for you the next time I'm there!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@littlek: I have this set that my SIL got me for my birthday one year - http://www.amazon.com/Microwavable-Bento-Lunch-Dishwasher--Chopstick/dp/B003MYDOOK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362666062&sr=8-1&keywords=lock+and+lock+bento

@betsyboop: No, I just put food on her high chair tray when we eat at home. I tried putting it on a plate last night but that was a disaster.

This is Charlie and Olive's bento from this morning.
Olive: gluten-free brown rice pasta w/ butter, boiled egg, clementines, broccoli nuggets (from mrs. chalk's post yesterday!), prunes, anchovies, shredded cheese, apples.
Charlie has the same except he has a veggie pouch and no prunes. I also made him chick eggs! An idea I saw on Pinterest of course. Olive's egg wasn't cooperating because I didn't boil it long enough, so hers are just sliced up.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@betsyboop: just on her tray at home too.
I also just use a regular Tupperware but bought silicone cupcake liners bc I don't have any. Maybe when she's older I'll buy cute "bentos".
Chicken & orzo w carrots & kale and pineapple for lunch.
Homemade applesauce & kiwi for a afternoon snack!

@Mrs. Bee: the chick eggs are SO cute! I must try for Easter bento :).
What travel case is their food in?
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
@regberadaisy: what bag do i use to carry their lunch? it's this big cooler bag from when mr. bee used to do a meal delivery service. it's huge and holds so much, including breakfast which i sometimes also pack.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Mrs. Bee: in your pic it looks like the individual containers are sitting in a pink case?
