    Everyone's lunches look great today!

I'm running low on everything in my fridge and also fell asleep on the couch (mommy fail) before I had a chance to prep anything new so today's lunch was just barely scrounged up.

Sauteed broccoli, ground beef + carrot + peppers pasta, grapes, cottage cheese.

I don't know how you mommies keep up the variety!

@regberadaisy: ah that's just part of the laptop lunchbox. it's a set that comes together. i love it but it's so many parts! but since all the boxes are different colors, it just makes the lunch more appealing.

I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous, I wish I had a reason to make them! Maybe I'll make some to bring for LO when we go out to eat.

@T-Mom: I love the bag! So cute! And I totally agree - I don't know how everyone keeps up with the variety also. It's only day 4 for me of bento lunches but everything is already a repeat! I'm going to have to just start making batches of things on the weekend.

@winniebee: Tyler eats so much! It's amazing how much babies can hold.

You ladies have really inspired me to step it up (starting next week) =P

Bell peppers and mushroom stirfry, strawberries, shredded cheese, cucumbers, scrambled eggs

@T-Mom: @lisa1783: I don't think repeating is bad, Prettybaby loves certain things and we do repeats all the time!! She spent the entire first half of her life eating the same thing everyday anyhow right? lol!!! I eat the same lunch every day too!

@prettylizy: T doesn't mind repeats....for a few days. On day 3, he gets annoyed and sometimes rejects.

    @lisa1783: I swear, he has a hollow leg : )

@prettylizy: I don't really mind repeating, but it's the sheer number of unique foods that some mommies are able to pack in one lunch that is astounding to me! I guess I'm just glad that DS doesn't seem to care and will shovel anything into his mouth.

I am definitely going to start on DD though. At 4, I think she would definitely appreciate the variety and visual appeal if I can get my butt in gear and do this for her.

I'm really enjoying packing bentos for M. I've been packing lunches for her for over a month and I tend to just "throw" stuff into a container. Packing bentos help me preplan and make sure she's getting a balanced meal. I get worried that soon she should be eating more real food and if she's getting a balanced nutrition. Espeically with the added notion of making sure she's getting enough iron and keeping the cholestrol in check. So I like the containers bc it helps me think OK, is she getting a protein, a vegetable, a fruit? Is she getting her iron? Is she eating too many items high in cholestrol today?

And her main entree is usually last night's dinner leftovers. Then I have back up veggies in the freezer, peas or roasted veggies I make in a bigger batch over the weekends. And we always have fruits in the house.

Thank you @Mrs. Bee: for all the bento blog posts!

@regberadaisy: Same! I feel like it really makes me think about what he is eating rather than giving him "whatever". He always has a fruit/oatmeal for breakfast and then a veggie or fruit for an afternoon snack (and puffs....) but I like to see grain/starch/protein for lunch and dinner. I also like giving him flavorful things because I read somewhere their palate really develops at this point and being more adventurous MIGHT help in the picky eater dept. later on : )

    @Mrs. Bee: woohoo!!!

@winniebee: I totally agree! Besides it's kinda awesome that my 10 month old has eaten more variety than most adults. Some of her teachers don't know some of the things we pack for her....so sad.

@regberadaisy: He has liked so much that I never thought he would! I did a cop out and packed some italian bread today. But....it was about to loose freshness so that was my mentality : )

Broccoli and peas. Sweet potato. Pasta with meat sauce @winniebee's recipe).

She also gets oatmeal with applesauce and cinnamon for breakfast, puffs and yogurt melts for snack. There are puree packs at daycare if she wants more.

I just made Cobi's FIRST bento! He is 12 months... however - and I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue - we stayed away from bowls/bentos/etc because he just picks up the dish and throws it or dumps it out and all the contents go on the floor. Without fail, every time. So what I do is make up his meal and then put bits and pieces directly on the table.

Bento:black beans, chicken coated with coconut flour, carrots and cheddar cheese

  16. winniebee

    hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts

@Mrs. Pen: yyummy!! I dont give them at home because bowls are toys (according to T) and it would all end up on the floor.

Today's breakfast- oatmeal and plums/ lunch - chicken stir fry w rice, beef and cArrots, clementin/ snack - avacado and puffs/ squash purée if he wants it.

@Mrs. Pen: yup had that same issue with olive when she was 1. she still does it from time to time, but at 17 months now she's much better about it.

here's charlie and olive's bento today:

dried seaweed, salmon, cucumbers, sauteed broccoli, prunes, cantaloupe, and rice w/ short ribs from dinner leftovers in the thermos. the carrots are also from the short ribs dish.

Charlie has the same except Asian pear instead of cantaloupe and no carrots.

@Mrs. Bee: my kids love the Dried seaweed as well and would eat a whole pack if I let them!

DS's lunch and snack: boiled egg, string cheese, strawberries, tangerine, meat from Chinese steamed bun, peas, bun part of Chinese steamed bun.

    Love this thread!

I only make bentos when we're out of the house on the weekends doing errands or visiting the grandparents. This bento was from 2 weeks ago...

cucumbers, sweet potatoes, avocado, hearts of palm, ham, and edamame (he eats a ton of fruit between meals & that's why I stick with protein and veggies at meal time)

  24. Mrs. Bee

    admin / watermelon / 14210 posts

@yin: what do hearts of palm taste like? i don't think i've ever tried them! i bought some after i saw your instagram haha to give to charlie and olive.

  25. yin

    honeydew / 7917 posts

@Mrs. Bee: Hmm... difficult for me to pin point exactly what it tastes like. Online sources say that it tastes like artichoke hearts but more mild (yup that sounds about right). They can often be found in fancy salads.

@Mrs. Bee: Just curious - did you put the rice and shortribs in the thermos to keep it warm? My daycare doesn't warm up food so I'm trying to find a way to keep things warm for my LO.

Today's bento: leftover roasted chicken, grapefruit, pineapple.

P.S. Make this roasted chicken. Best recipe ever. EVER.

    admin / watermelon / 14210 posts

@yin: ah ok! i love artichokes!

@lisa1783: i put soups into the thermos. the shortribs had a broth, so i mixed it with rice so that it was more like a chunky soup. our daycare heats food up, but i never ask them to.

i forgot to photograph bentos today because both kids slept in!

Owen was a food monster last night and almost 2/3 of a zucchini by himself! I love seeing everyone's bentos - definitely made me realize that I'm not giving enough veggies.

    Today's bento:
Roasted chicken, grapefruit, cheerios, sauteed zucchini/summer squash, cheese, yogurt melts (he had this for the first time last night and he closed his eyes in bliss - so cute!)

Does anyone esle's LO have trouble picking up cheese? I think the cheese we got was too thinely sliced. Any suggestions for brands?
