with all of the "are you sure LO can have that?" "You're not going to mash that up?" "Watch for xyz LO could be allergic" GAH!!!! I feel like I wouldn't have half the comments if I did purees. Does everyone else feel like at times there's all eyes on you? Why do people have to be so judgemental? The world would be pretty boring if everyone was the same...

I have had a few "are you really going to give him that?"'s and I just say, yup! -
I know what you mean! We visited family in Spain and England recently and no one had really seen BLW before so they found it SO hard to watch! A is really good at spitting stuff out that's too big for her but every time she gagged someone would be up and ready to pat her on the back. I was constantly telling them that she was fine, and that there was a big difference between gagging and choking, and that coughing meant she was dealing with it herself. They really struggled with it and it made me nervous!

I just nodded my head and smiled most of the time, and let them watch how well she ate. After a while, people calmed down.

My MIL is going to be this person. She still watched her 25 year old son when he eats to make sure he doesn't choke. She does the same to DS and it's ridiculous.

I've pretty much just done the smile and nod so far, as well as a bit of explaining myself over and over!
I think I'm being a little extra sensitive to it all because I'm literally the only one to breastfeed on one side of the family. So most of the parenting methods we've chosen aren't the 'norm' there so to speak!Anyways since we're on the topic, when you're LO's were about 6.5 months how many times a day were you offering solids? If there were no known sensitives did you offer pretty much anything (other than the don'ts)? My biggest hang ups so far seem to be dairy and grains, I haven't given any as yet.
If you were heading out to a cottage about 1.5 hours from medical attention would you be a little more careful with introducing new things for that week? I hadn't thought about that until DH brought it up last night. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

A woman in our local group on fb was constantly being haunted by her SIL about blw. "Oh that's very dangerous" etc etc. She had enough, and came up with one of the best replies I've seen yet. Copy, paste, and learn by heart:)
"I'm upset you think I'd do anything to risk my child's health. The World Health Organisation recommends the introduction of finger foods at 6 months and that's what we've done."
End of argument:-) of course the best thing to remember is that this phase passes so fast. They won't comment at all when baby is over 12 months or so!

@lolabee: My rule of thumb has been to only introduce new foods (that are known possible allergens) during doctor surgery hours. Wheat, eggs, kiwis, etc.
My SILs LO had a horrendous reaction to her first peanut at age 4 and there's no history of peanut allergy in either family. I know it's rare but there's no harm being careful.
If you consume dairy while breastfeeding then you should already know if baby is allergic to it, I thought?Offer food as often in a day as you can handle the mess and the scheduling of naps/milk feeds/meals. It can be a bit overwhelming at the start! I offered one meal a day for a good month. As you and they get used to it, offer more often. Of course the more often baby has the opportunity to explore finger food, the faster the skills develop. Your breast milk/formula will provide everything baby needs nutritionally until 12 months anyway so you're free to take a relaxed approach. Baby led, really:)

You're right about the dairy, I just didn't put two and two together on that one. I think for the week I'll just stay away from grains and do mostly veg and fruit. He's had kiwi so I guess we're good for that one
The nut and shellfish allergies are so rampant now a days, it's so scary!

@lolabee: the cleverest thing about that response is that you're throwing the accusation back on the person commenting. It's quite a clever way to point out that they're actually insulting you and usually they don't mean to so it stops them.
Anaphylaxis is just terrifying. Rare thankfully, but still... -
We ususally just let her show people what an incredible eater she was and it shut them down pretty quickly. 7month old gnawing on steak? Yep!

@lolabee: At 6.5 months, I think I stuck with the "safe" foods, meaning we stayed away from strawberries, tomatoes, peanuts and dairy. I would offer her a large piece of whatever I was eating or what was convenient, usually some type of veggie like asparagus or avocado. But I wanted her to get used to different tastes and textures.
Do you live 1.5 hours away from medical attention? Or is it just somewhere you're visiting?

@lolabee: The only thing we've consciously avoided is honey- and we're introducing peanut butter at the pediatricians. In general I just ignore commentary or tell them to wait and watch. Like @travelgirl1 I'm happy to explain how gagging is different and actually helping him. I'd be a lot more nervous to be giving an older baby finger foods for the first time who would be more likely to choke!

im just straight, yep it's fine he can have it. and i also give the speech about baby's gag reflex vs choking. i say it weekly to FIL.
everyone else is pretty laid back now that he's 9 months and is an eating machine!

@BabyBoecksMom: That's pretty much what we're doing so far too. Although I haven't given any grains yet either. We live in a large city, we're out at a lake/cottage with DH's family
@scg00387: That is what I read in the BLW book, to avoid honey. Good idea about introducing pb at the ped's. Do you have any family history of allergies? It seems that there is mixed comments on that. I know a few families where there is no history but an LO is sensitive to nuts or shellfish. So strange as I remember very few kids having food allergies when I was young.
I agree, it would scarier introducing finger foods later on. Gotta use the gag reflex to our advantage @mrsjyw: Ok - glad to know I'm not the only one constantly repeating it! I'm sure I sound like a broken record.
I know its very different for each bebe, but when did you notice milk feeds being dropped?

@lolabee: ds is 9 months and has been nursing 4x eating.3 meals. 2-3snacks for yhe last few wks. No nt feeds since 12 wks.

My MIL's supportive of the idea in theory, but in practice she's a nervous wreck. More than once she's tried to take a piece of food away from E to cut it into smaller pieces. It took a lot of demonstration for her to realize that he's got a good handle on it, and while's he's occasionally gagged and spit something out (because he really just wants all of the food in his mouth all of the time) that he's never choked.

@lolabee: We have no history of allergies, just milk intolerances. Peanut butter is the only one that terrifies me; we don't really eat seafood but I probably ought to let him try it at some point. LO nursed 4x a day and 1x overnight for a long time, briefly bumped to 2 a night for a while around 8 months, and then dropped the night feed just recently before 9 months. So he nurses 4x a day, eats 3 solids meals, and sometimes has an evening snack if he's grumpy or if I'm snacking and he's mooching
