My LO is 11 weeks old and taking 4oz of breastmilk in a 5oz Medela bottle. I'm going back to work soon and will need to buy extra bottles to leave at grandmas. Should I stick with the 5oz Medela bottles or upgrade to the 8oz bottle? When did your LO start taking bigger bottles?

My DS started taking 6 oz around 5 months, but you can fit 6oz of milk in the Medela 5 oz bottles. That's we did most of the time. DH prefers feeding DS with the smallr bottles and they were easier for DS to learn to hold.

My son never took more than 5 oz of breastmilk in a single feeding so we never got past the smaller bottles.

Are u planning to switch to formula at some point? If not u should never need to feed more than 4oz of BM at a time.

The same with the nipples. U should keep slow flow nipples for BM fed babies. The twins are almost 8 months, I leave 1oz per hour of separation - 3oz in am, 4oz at lunch, 3oz in afternoon. This is the case for breastfed babies. It will be different if u EP.

@Ms.SK: okay, this is GOOD to know. I was leaving like 10 oz for my 3 month old AND feeding her at lunch! I think the day care mama was just giving her a bottle every time she cried.

I started with the 5oz Breastflow bottles then when those didn't work well, I switched to the 9oz Tommee Tippee bottles. I figured DD may drink more soon and didn't want to buy more bottles later. The TT bottle size between 5oz and 9oz wasn't too different because of the shape so I just went bigger. DD still uses the same bottles now. Woot!

@Mrs. Chen: My son never took a medium flow nipple, even until we switched to sippy cups. He only wanted the newborn nipple.

Anytime I can help or you have questions let me know. I feel like I doubled my learning curve feeding twins. I also couldn't live without the kellymom advice. I am on there with questions at least once a week and my babes will be 8 months next week. The questions never end because your relationship develops in different ways as the get older. I didn't realize that when I started this.

@pelikila: Yes, I think I will stick with slow flow too. I was considering the medium flow nipples because those came with the bigger bottles but even the slow flow ones doesn't seem THAT slow. I tip the bottle over and it just flows out!

The most DD or DS has ever taken is 6oz of BM and that fits in the smaller bottles. I never switched from the slow flow nipples. The estimate is 1oz/hr of separation; however I found that DS needed about 12oz for 10hours away. When he wasn't eating solids it was 3 4oz bottles, once he started solids it was split as 3oz + solids, 6oz, 3oz + solids.
