Did/do you use a bottle sterilizer? Are they worth it, or is it better just to boil? Also, how often do you sterilize bottles?

i don't have one and don't think its necessary. i just boil my bottles...ideally 1x per week but it ends up being less often than that. maybe 1x every 2 weeks.

I just boiled when I bought them and hand washed afterwards.

My mom got me one. It's easy and holds stuff until I can get to it.

I just washed in hot soapy water. Didn't see the point of additional sterilization.

I boiled them before the first use and then only for the first few weeks. Now I hand wash and only boil if something gross happens.

I got a Philips Avent Microwave Steam Sterilizer because the bags can be finicky with bigger bottles. I like it.

I have a Dr. Brown's sterilizer. It fits 4 bottles and you just pop it in the mircowave for 5 minutes. Very easy.

We didn't buy a sterilizer. We just boiled them before the first use and a few times during the first month or so, then hand wash.

I have the avent one and use it all the time - for bottles, pacifiers, pump parts, and some toys.

I have one and like using it. Takes 5 min and gives me piece of mind. I have the Tommee Tippee steam one.

@cascademom: @PurpleUnicorn: @shopaholic: Ok, this may be the dumbest question ever, but I assume the sterilization takes the place of having to wash them in the dishwasher? I just added a sterilizer to my registry this morning. So do you just rinse them out and throw them in the sterilizer then you're done?

@Pepper: thanks for posting this. We got given a second hand steriliser yesterday by one of DH's clients. Our reactions were both "oh, you need to sterilise? I was just going to put them in the dishwasher..."

@lawbee11: I still use a soapy sponge to wash and rinse before tossing in the sterilizer. We haven't used bottles really in a month b/c of thrush concerns, but I still pump sometimes and use a soothie on car rides. I'd wash and sterilize all of that and her medicine syringes/droppers because I don't want any yeast to survive.

@lawbee11: not a dumb question! I wondered the same thing, lol. But i discovered that it's best to still wash with soap, then sterilize. that's why some people don;t sterilize after every use. I do just to make it a habit otherwise I forget how long it's been. And the sterilizer that goes in the microwave is so easy and fast to use, it's not a hassle like I imagine it would be to boil on a regular basis.

Yeah, so I boiled them when I first got them, but have never sterilized since. LO seems fine! I handwash or use the dishwasher (top rack).

Steamed them in a steam bag and then WS
Washed in hot soapy water after....no need to sterilize all the time.

@lawbee11: I wash the bottles and then throw them in the sterilizer a couple of times a week. It's just to make sure that the bottles are absolutely clean and no build up of our city water on them.

I had one and liked it. We didn't have a microwave, and we used a lot of chemicals in our dishwasher.
I basically used it as a storage container that also happened to be a steamer.
Whenever I boiled something, I either forgot the pot on the stove and burned it, or something melted. So for me, the sterilizer was the safer option!

I never used one. I just throw my bottle and pump parts in the dishwasher.
