So I live in Maryland and my ragweed allergies are in full-force. Are there any allergy medicines, either homeopathic or regular, that are safe to take while breastfeeding? Any other ideas? I'm so uncomfortable!

I took generic claritin and had no issues. My doctor and LC both said it was safe for breastfeeding.

@edelweiss: @Bluebonnet: thanks ladies! This itchy nose is driving me crazy!

The only thing that works for me is Benedryl. Claritin is child's play for my allergies! I just take 1 and make sure to take my prenatal vitamins and supplements like Mother's Milk Plus or Fenugreek (in hopes of counter-acting any drying effect). Not sure if it helps or not, but so far, no issues besides being drowsy.

@shopaholic: Interesting. My doctor (allergist) and LC specifically said to avoid Benadryl because its known for decreasing supply as well as causing LO to be fussy or drowsy.

@Bluebonnet: I know. I waffled on taking it for so long too, but nothing else really works for me. I usually take it at night after LO's gone to sleep, and take all my supplements. So ar no problem. And my girl doesn't get sleepy/drowsy from nothing! Benedryl, alcohol, her shots... sometimes I wish she would be more sleepy!

@shopaholic: Its great that you found a solution that works for you and doesn't impact your supply.
I hope I didn't come across as judgemental, I wanted to let the original poster (and anyone else that reads this) that Benadryl is not recommended as first step to treat allergies because of the potential negative side effects.

@Bluebonnet: oh not at all! I was really concerned before taking it too. The main concern seemed to be about a drowsy baby. So after I tested it once when I had a sleepless night of allergies. Every baby and mama I'd different though...
