when did you start feeding lo pumped milk? did you deal with nipple confusion? ideally, i want to breastfeed at home, and do bottles when we're out (i prefer the convenience of a bottle), or if lo is staying with dad or someone else. anyone have any tips on getting baby to take/get used to the breast and bottle from the beginning?

I supplemented With formula for few weeks because my milk supply started off really low and Lo was jaundiced.
She never had nIpple confusion and nursed well!I also gave her pumped milk.

LO was supplemented with formula for a week...she had no nipple confusion at all and once we both got the hang of breastfeeding she didn't have another bottle until a couple of weeks before I had to go back to work (so she was around 9 weeks) and she took the bottle easily. Though she does prefer the breast.
The only confusion came with the pacifier.

I agree with @chopsuey119. We had to supplement and J hasn't ever had any issues/confusion. We've done formula, pumped milk and mixed bm/formula bottles.
I suggest being open to trying different bottles. He gets more air from bottles and gets gas worse than when eating off of my breast. We've tried 3 or 4 different kinds now, the Similac nipples were too hard/big for his teensy mouth, then I tried an off brand but they were too small although the right texture. Finally we were suggested to try the Nuk brand, it is supposed to be the most similar to eating from the breast and he's taken to it very well! I started back to work this week and have been trying to nurse twice a day with still having pumping sessions so that DH has milk to put in his bottles while I'm away.

@babyjmama: I agree about the bottles. When we had to supplement LO drank from Avent bottles, but after learning how to breastfeed, she refused that bottle. And the Medela. So we ended up using a sample mOmma bottle and she loved it because the nipple is more like a breast.

I started giving LO bottles of pumped milk at about 2 weeks. Like you, I nurse at home and do bottles when we are out. He is almost 3 months now. However, we didn't give him a bottle for 3 weeks recently and then he didn't want a bottle so it took a bit of trying to get him to take one again. I suggest you make sure to give bottles regularly so you don't have that problem. LO is fine as long as he gets 1-2 bottles a week.

I agree with PPs about bottles similar to the breast. We used Tommee Tippee and she took to them NO problem.

@MrsJazz...it's amazing how different a bottle can be! I have two starter kit boxes of the Similac bottles, just sitting there.
Maybe when he's a little older and has a better grasp on things and we're not nursing anymore we can try them out again. He's just 6 1/2 weeks old so there's still time

My LO got a bottle from day one and did great in the beginning she would drink from any bottle just fine and would breastfeed just fine too. Then around 3 weeks or so I stopped bottle feeding for over a month and she forget how to eat from the bottle and now will only drink from one particular type of nipple; a latex orthodontic nipple that is part of the playtex drop-in system

@photojane: I had registered for the Similac and got a few batches of them...I really wish I hadn't. If I had it to do over again I would have registered for a single bottle of a few different kinds so you can just test them out. You'll end up saving money in the end that way

We gave LO her first bottle at 3-4 weeks. We had to try a few different kinds, but she ended up being able to eat from the mOmma bottles. We never had problems with nipple confusion. I wouldn't register for just one type. We did that, but wish we hadn't.

FWIW, when I started registering at BuyBuyBaby, she made a point to tell me that they allow returns for any reasons. She gave the example of bottles knowing that different babies like different ones. Therefore, she told me to buy a bunch, figure out which ones worked and return the rest, even if they're used. She just asked that we try to keep the packaging. Not sure if they're in your area but that's good to know.

I have like 4 different types of bottles (gifted to us) and our lo will take any of them. I started her on bottle supplementing breast at 3 weeks. I would start sooner rather than later to get them ready for bottles since you're going to need to use them with daycare.
Maybe I'm a cynic or had a really good baby, but I really don't believe in nipple confusion.

@photojane: I started at 4 weeks. I had been told 4-6 weeks is optimal for introduction (too early and he might reject the breast, too late and he might reject the bottle.....that was the theory anyway). I used the Medela Calma nipple to avoid nipple confusion.
And I wouldn't register for any bottles. My Medela Calma came with my breast pump (along with 2 Medela bottles). If you are mainly breastfeeding, it is all you need. You should get bags to store milk too.

I introduced the bottle at 3 weeks. My little ones didn't have any issues with the bottle, though the first couple of feedings, I had to be in another room or he would fuss a bit. He now takes bottle every night.
We only had one bottle on hand (Playtex Ventaire) and have been using it since the beginning.

thanks everyone! i think i'll register for two or three kinds. i'm thinking tommee tipee and mOmma, since they seem most breast-like.

I agree that you shouldn't register for too many, because you will have no idea what your LO will take to. I registered for one brand but actually got several different kinds plus my sister gave me all of her old bottles and I just had to buy replacement nipples. DD seemed to prefer the cheapest of them but would use any of them. We introduced a bottle early because of my milk coming in late.

Within the first couple of weeks because my LO wouldn't latch on until he was a month old. After we started breastfeeding we didn't give him a bottle for a month and a half and the reintroduction involved A LOT of crying and perseverance from DH.
So my advice is to try and give a bottle at least once a day or a few times a week from the beginning.

Our little girl got a bottle from day one once she started feeding (she was a preemie so she was tube fed for a while). I pumped exclusively and she got my breast milk. She has never had any nipple confusion. She continues to get both bottle and breast now!

We started at 6 days old. We used Dr Brown's bottles and she did just fine. I give her a bottle of pumped breastmilk every single noght, and there have still been a couple of times when she has tried to go for the breast over the bottle. I really think nipple confusion is a myth. My advice would be to introduce the bottle sooner rather than later and be sure to give it consistently.

We had to deal with nipple confusion and it was a nightmare! It was from the hospital giving LO bottles...by the time we got home on day 6 the lactation consultant that came to our house diagnosed it. It took a lot longer to reverse, and only at two months we started giving one bottle a day, when I was confident that BF was really really well established.

We had to supplement for the first month or so, and had no problems with nipple confusion. I love being able to give bottles when we are out, as I am not comfortable bf'ing in public. He gets a bottle a day to reinforce the habit since he prefers breast if given a choice.
I bought a few types of bottles, but only used a free sample Avent and just stuck with that brand since it worked. I did buy MAM nipples since the ladies here had luck with them, and they work great.
Every baby is different though, you never know what will or won't work until you give it a try.
Maybe when he's a little older and has a better grasp on things and we're not nursing anymore we can try them out again. He's just 6 1/2 weeks old so there's still time
