When we introduced formula, we mixed it with breastmilk since he didn't like it "straight." I would be hesitant to mix if you have only 3oz. Maybe try as is first, then if he refuses, mix to see if he'll take it.

According to lactmed Bactrim shouldn't be used in the newborn period but in general is safe and compatible with breastfeeding. Definitely don't dump! Freeze the milk you pump tonight, label it so you know to use later, and use it when lo is older.

How are you feeling? Did C do ok with the formula?

I am so sorry that your OB prescribed you something that you can't BF on!!! I would be seriously pissed off--you would think he of all doctors would know you're breastfeeding, or at least think to ask! I would just give the formula as is--I hope you're feeling better! Is there any way your OB can switch your meds so you can take one that you can nurse on so you don't need to worry about pumping/giving bottles of formula? I hope things are going ok!!

I'm glad everything is working out in terms of feeding the baby! We also supplemented with a few bottles of formula in those early weeks, and it turned out absolutely fine! We are EBF at this point and he's almost five months old.

I just wanted to chime in and add that I am also allergic to penicilin and my doctor prescribed clindamycin when I got mastitis when my baby was three weeks old, and we kept breastfeeding with no issues. He ended up getting really gassy, so I started taking some probiotics, and we both got straightened out within a week.

Although maybe take my advice with a grain of sand, because my doctor also told me to pump and dump because I had mastitis, and my lactation consultant told that that advice was ridiculous and outdated and nursing actually helps treat it!

@hilsy85: My doctor sucked in general, so I was kind of hesitant to post that...I'm happy to hear that someone else had the same experience with clindamycin!

@pepper: good luck, I hope you feel better soon! Mastitis is no joke, especially when you're already exhausted and trying to figure out how to take care of your newborn.

@Pepper: Bactrim is safe in babies, but not in newborns. I generally don't give it to babies less than 2 months of age, because it can cause an increase in unconjugated bilirubin levels; and therefore, jaundice. Jaundice is usually not a big deal, but if the bilirubin levels are high enough, then it can cause neurologic problems. To be completely safe, I wouldn't breastfeed while taking Bactrim. True, the risks are probably small, but I'm of the "why chance it?" group.

@hilsy85: Depends on how allergic she is to penicillin. They can cross-react.

@Pepper: Pump like crazy! I'm so afraid of someone even looking at my boobs funny because it might make my supply dip, lol! It will also help clear the infection faster.
