Does your daycare close for the holidays, how do you handle that when you work? Our in home closes from Christmas Eve thru New Years Day. This year DH can not take any days off (black out dates at work.) Luckily my MIL gets 2 weeks off of work at this time so she can help out on the days I still have to work without having to take a lot of extra vacation days. How do you manage closings?

Ours is closed from December 24th to January 11th. I WAH, but I will not be working during that time as we don't have any local help. My ILs are coming to visit for a few days, but I certainly don't plan on using them as childcare during that time.

Part of why we chose our daycare is because it didn't have long closures that we would have to deal with, since that would be difficult for us as we both WOH and have no local family or friends that could help.
Ours is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas and closes early New Year's Eve and is closed New Year's Day, but is open the rest of the time.

They close at 3 on the 24th and 31st. Then closed 25th and 1st.

SO ANNOYING. Ours is closed Dec 24 - Jan 2. We usually just find a college kid home on break to babysit, but this year my parents are able to fly up for the entire week to babysit.

That's one reason we picked the places we did. We can't really deal with long closures so that was a deal breaker for us.

My coworker's daycare is closed TWO weeks during the holidays. I think that's crazy. She's probably going to have to take some unpaid leave because she just got off maternity leave this month.

My son's preschool offers a "camp" during the breaks, once you get onto the school year calendar, there are a lot of closings to take into account.

We all fill in the gap. DH is def more flexible than me, and then my mom will chip in too.

Mine closes Christmas Eve - Monday after New Years. It's also DH's busiest time of year so he can't take off work. I am taking Christmas Eve as a vacation day (why we don't get this off I dont understand) then we are hiring DS's favorite daycare teacher to watch him the following week. It's a lot of $ but thankfully only 4 days and he really loves this teacher so I know he's going to have a blast.

Yup, T's preschool is closed 12/18 through 1/4 (two weeks off). I WAH but thankfully we have a nanny for R so she will have both kids during those weeks.

I just have to factor that in when allocating my vacation days for the year.

If the daycare closes on a day I have to work, I work from home. We don't have family nearby and everyone we know that could watch him works also.

Ours closes that week, too. Thank goodness we live close to family, so my ILs will watch him 2 days and my dad will watch him 2 days. If our old daycare in Philly had done this, it would have been a bigger issue - someone probably would have had to come stay with us.

Her current daycare is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I know they're closed New Year's Day not sure about New Year's Eve (we're keeping her home NYE regardless).
Next year she'll be at a new preschool and they're closed for two weeks. DH has winter break so he'll be able to stay home with her. We also keep her home between Christmas and New Year's anyways because my office is closed and I feel bad sending her when there are so few kids there that week.

Our nanny takes off the week of Christmas. Usually DH takes the week off or works from home that week because my company forces non-billable employees to take off the week between Christmas and New Years, so I am off the next week. (We've asked our nanny if she can switch, but she really can't because of her childcare situation.) I just make sure and budget it in when I am planning vacations for the year.
My boss's kid's preschool closes from 12/18 to 1/6. (2.5 weeks) She usually takes a combination of PTO and works from home.

Ours is closed the week btwn Christmas and New Year's. Both DH and I are off that week - however, they do have a sign indicating that if care is needed they can work something out.

Ours is closed Christmas and New Year's Day. However from 12/21 through 12/31, they have holiday camp which you have to pay extra to attend. We're lucky that dh teaches so instead of spending extra money he'll be home with her.

Yes, but I'm lucky and I am on a college schedule so I have the days off as a holiday as well.

@LuLu Mom: Ours is closed for two weeks!!!! I work in my time off during that time, and will work during naps. It's not ideal, but we knew about it going into the year, which made it possible to plan for.

@looch: Do they charge a lot for it? That would be awesome!! Not only is my LO's school closed for two weeks, but we still have to pay for it too.

Yes they are closed. But DH is a teacher so he's off at the same time. Same for summers!

In the past our daycare has closed for 5 days between Christmas and New Years depending on when the holidays fall but we were not charged that week.
This year they are only closing Christmas Day and New Year's Day but I am keeping them home 12/23-1/1 anyway and we are not paying for that week. It is nice to have a little financial break at this expensive time of year!

they are closed 12/24 - 1/4. we're lucky in that dh is on a school schedule so he's always home on holidays. i'll be taking 2 weeks off tho at the end of the year because i don't use many vacation days anyway

Ours closes the week of the 4th of July and my husband and I have decided to use that as our family vacation week so we both use vacation days during that time.
They close early (at 3pm) on Christmas Eve and reopen the next business day after New Year's. My husband and I usually each take a day or 2 and then my mom and niece cover the other days. I'm thankful that my mom is semi retired and can do this.
thankfully we don't have to pay for either of these weeks so while it's difficult to make other arrangements it is a financial break.

Our center is only closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I'm a WAHM so it's not a big deal, I wasn't planning on working those days anyway.

@littlejoy: I just had to look it up, beginning at age 3, it costs about $70.

Our daycare closes early on the 'eves and Christmas and NY day. Our public school is closed for two weeks for our older. I'm off work (vacation) for the first week of our older child's break. The second week the older will go to daycare (pay daily rates for her). I picked a daycare that wouldn't "dictate" my vacation time for me. It's bad enough visiting family does

Closing for that long would have been a deal breaker for us. Our center is only closed on christmas and new year's days.
I just have to factor that in when allocating my vacation days for the year.
