I'm not sure. I know my son talks less at daycare, but I think group dynamics are frequently a lot different than the one on one we have at home.

I know that his teachers do lots of activities and spend time talking and interacting with him daily (like circle time, story time, music, etc). He's wary of people he doesn't know or like, and he LOVES his teachers, so I'm certain they're spending time interacting with him.

So I'm not sure how old your daughter is (my son is 17 months) but I think at least in some part it might depend on the overall picture of your daycare and how you feel about the teachers/activities/overall level of care?

My 19 month old goes to a sahm's house with a 20 month old twice a week. She speaks much less there, especially when the other kiddo is around. The mom says she talks a lot more if her kid is napping. So, doesn't sound too concerning but not sure how old your child is and what the concern is other than her talking less. Some people are just more shy and introverted. I still talk less in public than I do at home or around close friends.

Yes, this would concern me. I had something similar going on with DS. When he started day care they took great care of him physically, but I don't think they talked to him enough. He often picked up a new word at home over the weekend, but never brought any words home from day care. His speech development was really slow until he moved up to an older group. I kept telling my family that I don't think he's being talked to and that I need to cut his day care hours and spend more time with him, but everyone called me crazy until a speech therapist who knows the day care said the same thing a year later. He's doing much better now (same day care, older group, and he had EI fur a year) but I'm still angry that he kind of lost a year of speech development. I don't think a nanny would have been better, he would have talked sooner maybe but wouldn't have so much time with other kids... I just wish I'd followed my gut and told my family to get lost with their opinions.

I am guessing if your lo is the youngest that he is in the 2 year old room? That would shock me if none of the kids in that room are talking. It would shock me more if the teachers said they were surprised a child had 50 words.

When my daughter was in daycare (my only experience, since I started staying home when my son was born) I remember them commenting all the time on how much she spoke. They were surprised at her language. This was when she was between 18 and 24 months old.

If I were you I would ask what to do they plan to do to get her to talk more. I would ask about a daily schedule, what do they do every day to help the children to learn new words and how to speak.

I don't get how they aren't picking up words, if they are being spoken to. My youngest, doesn't speak much, but he's a boy and the third born. He doesn't NEED to speak because his brother and sister speak for him, but that wouldn't be the case in daycare.

@MrsH: hmm... at 20 months my son wasn't talking much, maybe same, 50 words, but he was in a class with mainly girls who were talking A LOT, so we were worried about him and brought him to get tested, but he was fine, then a few months later he just exploded with language.

But he was definitely a late talker.... agree with others about being worried about his room. Even though I felt a little bad that LO was not talking as much as the other kids, I was glad they were talking so he could learn from them.
