I have to have a hysteroscopy and HSG next week. It will be an office procedure with no anesthetic. I was told to take some Tylonel 3s before hand but I'm scared that's not enough. Is this going to be horrible? I also am reading online that you can't BD for 2 weeks after. I was not aware of that. I was assuming we could still TTC this cycle. I'm almost tempted to just not call and book this procedure because I am so anxious about it. What are your experiences?

@delight: my hyst was completely painless without any advil. I took an advil about 30 minutes before the hsg and felt cramping for about 5 seconds and it was over. I had gone during lunch and was gonna go home after, but felt perfectly normal and just went back. I think they told me no sex for 5 days each time. 2 weeks sounds extreme!

@delight: I had an HSG and it was pretty painful! Over very quickly but I remember it hurting like heck for a minute or two! Once it was over it was over no pain! Some cramping, but nothing crazy!
I honestly can't remember if they said no intercourse or not!
I don't think so as many get PG the cycle of their HSG

I had an HSG and it wasn't painful at all. I think I went back to work afterwards. And I do not recall being told to not have sex afterwards since, like @FaithFertility: says, I've also heard that many girls get pregnant right after the HSG. Good luck!

So I guess I'd describe mine as wildly uncomfortable but not at all something you'd need anesthesia for, if that make sense? More like a nails on a chalkboard sensation. And even that was brief - the majority of it was painless. I don't think I was told not to have sex, but it was a few years ago, so I can't be sure.

My hysteroscopy wasn't too bad. It was painful for a minute, but not unbearable. Definitely easier than childbirth

HSG had very mild cramping- ibuprofen should be all you need. I was told not to have sex from the start of my period til the HSG (I think it was 11 or 12 days). I had a saline hysterogram- that had some cramping, but less than when I had an IUD inserted. Good luck!

I have seen HSG experiences vary wildly. Mine was incredibly painful, to the point where I passed out in the middle of it. I had to go home and recover for the rest of the day before I was able to function. But I think that experience is relatively unusual and for most people it's either somewhat uncomfortable or hardly anything at all. I don't know about the hysteroscopy but I've also heard many success stories in the cycle with the HSG because it 'clears away the cobwebs', so to speak, so definitely think abstaining for 2 weeks is unusual. I know for sure we BD'd the cycle of our HSG, although it wasn't successful. I think my procedure was on CD 4 and we started on CD 9 or something like that!

@FaithFertility: I am hoping we are one of the ones that get PG that cycle. I'm sorry yours was painful. I think I can take it hurting for a minute or two but I've heard of people passing out from pain and I'm scared of that!
@agold: thanks for sharing your experience. I am planning on taking the day off. Who doesn't like a day off to relax and watch a movie on the couch? I'm glad your HSG wasn't too painful.
@Madison43: I don't know why some places do it under general and others don't. I'm happy to hear most of you have a brief procedure.

@AmeliaBedilia: i wasnt told anything at my initial appointment about not having sex before. I'm hoping to schedule it as soon as AF is done so shouldn't be a problem. I just hope we can DTD after so this month isn't lost. Thanks for sharing and to you this month!
@Trailmix: ooooh yikes that's what I am afraid of. I'm sorry yours was painful. I'm sure there are a number of factors that play a role in pain levels. Did you take pain med before?I don't know why I am so anxious. I feel I have had more pain with childbirth. Also with our loss at 22w I had a D&E. I had to have 4 laminares (seaweed sticks) inserted in my cervix the day before to help me dilate. This can't be that much worse right?! I appreciate everyone's stories. All this sucks but it helps to hear from others who have been through this.

I was told no sex for 24 hours after both my HSGs. My first one sucked and I cried pretty much the whole time. My second one was 3.5 years after I had my son and it was a breeze! My RE said it is usually a lot less painful after you've gone through childbirth and I found that to be true. I don't have any experience with a hysteroscopy though.

I had a HSG and it was uncomfortable just for a moment, and definitely way better than a pap smear. I don't take anything beforehand for pap smears and didn't for the HSG either.
If the doctor warned me about sex after, I don't recall now.
We got pregnant the very next cycle.

I had no pain at all, (not even discomfort)with an HSG and she said, if you've had a baby before it tends to be less painful or painless.

I had my hysteroscopy today and a SHG. Not sure how much different that is than HSG but it was foam shot through the tubes. I'm glad I had Tylonel 3 in me because the hysteroscopy was painful. He kept having to insert the scope over again because my uterus was tilted. Then he had to clamp my cervix. It was a pretty quick procedure and the nurse let me squeeze her hand. Looking back I was probably just being a baby. I ended up ovulating early this cycle on CD 11 (yesterday) so we won't be trying this month. He did say that I could have DTD tomorrow if I had wanted to. He also thought it was funny that I knew I ovulated yesterday. Apparently not everyone charts their cycles
At any rate, all looks good in there. Although I got high FSH results last week, my follicle count looks good so he says I'll likely be able to go ahead with IUI and/or IVF if we choose. We discuss our options next month.

@delight: Hugs! Every girl needs a hug after those procedures! I'm sorry that you needed to have them done, but it gives good information for making the next step for IUI or IVF...
And holy freaking ouch. Double hugs for having to go through the clamp! They used something like a clamp and definitely a cervical dilator for my embryo transfer last week. Most girls don't need that extra instrument and it takes 2 minutes but my cervix is tilted, too, so it took a few minutes longer and multiple "tries." Argh, the things we go through!
