My mom fed my 4 month old a bit of chocolate chip cookie. I flipped my lid! She thought it was funny. And coincidentally LO would NOT go to sleep that night. You bet I laid it on super thick when I talked to my mom the next day.

Thennnn this past week (16m) she gave her some of those sour sugar candy strip thingies. No, mom I do not want her having processed sugar yet!

Apparently people do this. This is why I am a firm believer in no people until age seven No one ever did to my girls, but I am surprised at how common this seems to be. Do you think he would be receptive to an explanation of why you've made the choices you have regarding food and nutrition? Some older people just genuinely don't know, I think. If you suspect he would blow you off, I would try to figure out ways to keep C with you or your husband when food issues might come up.

I have one Aunt known for this. I have made it perfectly clear that I don't want her having any food for a while. So far they have listed. But now that she is starting purees, I have a feeling they are going to start to try.

We went to visit my grandparents when DS was 3 months and my grandma kept asking if he wanted ice cream. Then my uncles wife said I need to give him pudding at dinnertime so he would sleep through the night. What? Oh my MIL gave him iced tea when he was like 4 months too.

@MamaJ: oh wow. Pudding. Now that's one I have not heard of! LOL

@locavore_mama: @grizz: yeah I was like pudding? The snack pack kind or does she mean something else? I didn't ask. I just ran away haha

@looch: my mom did this to us! And I have a friend whose mom suggested dipping her son's paci in sugar before shots...it worked like a charm, and he was quite content

Ugh... yes. We were pretty good about keeping an eye on her though. My mom kept wanting to 'feed' her even though we chose to do BLW. So when grandma was there we often had soup so she could be 'fed'. Once at a party I walked out of the room and thought DH was watching her, DH thought I was watching her, when I came back she was being fed cheescake and she can't have dairy. Seriously people!! Use your head and ask first!

@grizz ugh this is my #1 fear about my inlaws. they gave my niece all kinds of stuff--ice cream, popsicles when she was teeny tiny. i feel like i will have to watch them constantly.

You know, for some people, offering food is an expression of love. I know it is for my parents. My father would absolutely give his life for my son, so when he gives him somethig to eat, it's an expression of that.

I know it's not easy when it's sugary junk, but let's try to think of it from their perspectives too! It might help us come up with better ways to deal with it.

@grizz: just wait till C is actually on solids. Sunday at my in laws they had peanut butter m&ms that I was eating (can't control myself around them). MIL was holding DS and said "mommy is so mean she won't give you any of those! Look at her eat them right in front of you!" Uhm he is only 9 months, it's an allergy, and a choking hazard. I know she was joking but ugh. Enough with the mean mommy comments.

@looch: maybe I will totally change my mind on this later on, but this is what it is in my family. I don't know that my parents/family would blatantly disregard my wishes, but I also don't know how huge a deal it is going to be to me. Maybe yes, and if there is a food allergy, then YES, but food is always shared at my house.

Not saying people are wrong for being upset...it just doesn't seem as huge of a deal to me. I don't want to spoon feed my child sugar, but a taste seems different than that. And I'm honestly not trying to provoke an argument....promise!

Not that I know of. My SIL's brother asked (when SIL wasn't around) if he could give my niece a carob chip cookie. I said no way. He seemed like he wasn't going to listen so I said they have egg in them and it's not ok for her to have eggs yet. That finally shut him up.

oh no I am already worried about this and I'm not due till March. Every time we go back home for a weekend to visit, we have lunch with my dad and gran on Sunday before our 3 hour drive back to our house. EVERY TIME I tell them not to feed the dogs. My gran thinks I'm the meanest person ever for it, but I've told them 17490374 times that the driving combined with all the stupid crap they feed them makes them barf. They just don't get it. I will have to really get the point across when it's a real baby. My gran looks right at me and as soon as I look away she does it out of the corner of my eye. Drives me insane.

@looch: fair. I was just thinking that age has a lot to do with it, too. And I still would be angry if it did bother me, and people just straight up ignored me. At this point, though, it conceptually doesn't. Like I said, maybe it will. But I'm not sure about that.

@grizz: wow that would make furious! no one tried to feed my 3 month old any solid food. My mom was really impatient to start feeding her at 4 month but respected my decision to wait and never gave her sweets

No one has done this to us yet, though my IL's tend to be a little eager and will give her pieces of food even though she's not done with what she has already in her mouth. She has 6 teeth - it takes a minute to chew!
What really irks me about so many of these posts are the 'mean mommy' comments. Seriously?! That stuff just really irks me. Setting limits based on what is best for my child isn't always fun, but I certainly don't need my kid learning that it's okay to call me mean when I enforce them.

Um, I've never given LO up long enough for anyone to try, but I think I would flip my s*** if anyone fed my LO ANYTHING that I didn't say she could have. My side would never because they know it's not cool with me but I can definitely see in-laws trying. They eat total crap and don't see anything wrong with the little kids eating all that stuff. I just will not let anyone hold her while people are eating. I'm sure they think I'm nuts but I couldn't care less.

@grizz: Uggh, I would seethe with anger, so I completely understand you. I just cannot imagine giving any child something to eat without asking the parents first. I hate that 'mean mommy' stuff, too. And when people say, 'Oh I'll just give it when mommy's away!' that would make me say '...aaaand you'll never be alone with my LO!'
