I just realized that my rising Kindergartener can't clink a mouse or navigate a computer at all. I don't know why this thought escaped me. My 7yo DD struggled with computer usage in the Spring. I doubt I'll do anything about it at this point but I wonder what other Kindergarten ready skills will look different this year.

Wow, that totally didn't cross my mind either. I was all excited because the school is sending chrome books home with the kids in case of a shut down... of course he doesn't know how to use it yet!
I imagine they'll pick it up pretty quickly though, kids are smarter at this stuff than we were as kids.

Back in March we started letting Dd use my laptop to play games on pbskids and do her pre-k schoolwork. (Most of which was watching videos but they could do work in ixl.) Initially I didn’t have a Mouse for her and she was using the touchpad. When I did buy one, it was harder for her and she’ll still default to using the touchpad instead, but was able to figure both out.

I just started letting our 5 year old type and navigate on my computer. She's picked it up really fast (although I have a touchpad and not a mouse, and she keeps forgetting that it's not touchscreen like a phone!)

@Corduroy: we had my 2nd grader use an iPad for distance learning in the spring because it was what we had but was is definitely easier for her to navigate. We are planning to have my rising kindergartener use the iPad too. I am expecting to do a lot of support to make this remote learning possible.

@MamaCate: We used our iPad too. I got a relatively inexpensive stylus for it (not the Apple one), and that seems to be easier for practicing writing exercises.

I’m homeschooling for Kindergarten this year, but this is making me think I should add computer skills into my list of extras to cover. That really hadn’t been on my radar...but we’re planning to re-enroll our daughter back in school next year (fingers crossed that things are more normal then!), and I bet kids who did distance learning this year will be pros at this kind of thing by that point.
We tried to have her use the mouse track pad a bit during online speech appointments, but she discovered that my laptop has a touchscreen and got around having to use the mouse at all. It was funny that I’d had the computer for a year and never realized that...

@krispi: ooh that’s a great idea! Do you remember what brand you got? I might have to do the same. We did a lot of work on a paper and then take a picture to submit it last spring but I really have no idea what to expect for K.

@MamaCate: It's a Logitech one from Amazon. The exact model depends on what year of iPad you have.
As far as computer skills, my daughter was really excited to move up to kindergarten because they get to spend time in the computer lab at her school, but she didn't get to go in pre-k. We'll have to see if school resumes in person at some point to see what they teach in the lab, but computer skills are definitely included in K for them. My laptop confuses her because it's not a touch screen, and she hasn't mastered all the gestures on the mouse pad for scrolling, etc.
