I usually don't, maybe one sometimes....it just never occurred to me to do so and plus I think he wouldn't eat a lot at his meals, esp lunch (his worst meal, eating wise!)

he's 14 months and yes, we have been giving him a snack before his morning nap, and one before his afternoon nap :). Usually a big handful of cut up fruit and maybe a rice cake or something like that. and water.
Sometimes he gets mum mums/rice cakes/etc when we are out and about!

Yes! He'd be a hellion if I didn't. His largest meal of the day is breakfast (usually a piece - a full banana or peach, etc - of fruit, two pieces of turkey sausage, and an egg) then he has a morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner on top of nursing 3 to 5 times a day. DS is 16 months old.

She's 15 months and gets a morning, afternoon and post daycare snack. She needs it!

oh man now I feel like I've been depriving him! looks like I will start offering a snack to him. I just don't want it to ruin his appetite for meals, ya know? he doesn't have the best appetite.

@stargal: how old is he? When LO was ready for snacks she was literally cranky until we did!
This is her feeding schedule:
7:00 breakfast.
9:30 morning snack
11:30 lunch
2:30 afternoon snack
5:00 post daycare snack
6:00/6:30 dinner.
She also drinks milk twice a day and nurse 2x a day.

I started snacks around 11 months - usually fruit or yogurt once or twice a day.
Around 14 months her snack intake increased. She still eats well at meals so I don't stress about it. She's almost 21 months now and gets 2-3 snacks
8:45- breakfast
11:00 - morning snack
12:30- lunch
(Sometimes a snack if she's starving before her nap but it's rare)
4:30 - afternoon snack
6:30 - dinner

Same exact schedule as @locavore_mama. I figure that I eat 5 small meals a day, so she probably needs them too

She gets one or two. Morning and after her nap. It depends on how well she eats breakfast... Usually not that well.

I am the odd (wo)man out. R is 13 months and I don't give snacks. Sometimes when I am preparing supper I will give her a little bit of what I am using ie. cheese. Or if she is being really cranky around 4:30 (eat at 5ish). No wonder she eats so much at mealtimes!

DS is 12 months old, and we started maybe one snack after his afternoon nap. Does nursing count as a snack? I usually just nurse him during the typical snack times.

Yep. She gets 2ish snacks a day.
Nuts, yogurt melts, fruit, cheese, crackers..

Yes, at almost 14 months, she gets snacks three times a day. I was worried about ruining her appetite also but I couldn't figure out why she was fussy in between meals then I offered snacks (cheerios, fruit, cheese, etc) and she is much happier! And still eats great at most meals!

Yes, I typically always offer a mid-afternoon snack.
6:30/7:00 breakfast - sippy of milk
7:30/8: breakfast
10: snack (usually cheese or crackers)
11:30 lunch
12: bottle of milk
3:30/4 afternoon snack (usually cut fruit, cheese, or hummus)
5:30/6: dinner
7: bottle
Every day is a little different. If we are out and about I always have snacks and always offer them to keep him occupied and happy (ie, while we are in the grocery store or shopping). Some days he's not as into his meals and other days, like today, he ate a ton.
He's almost 15 months.

Yep he has fruit, or veggies, mummums, or annie's crackers (he's 8.5 months) 2-3x a day

@locavore_mama: He's 13 months. he does get 3 cups of milk a day (not at meal times, he gets water at meal times) so I dunno if that counts as snacks?
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@stargal: how much milk is he drinking? if he's drinking a lot of milk during the day it could impact his appetite. also sometimes i find if i feed T when he is tired, most of the meal ends up on the floor. so, i try to do it before he's cranky.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@stargal: that doesn't seem like too much! t probably has about the same.

My LO is 11.5 months and we've been giving him a snack since about 9.5/10 months old. He usually gets something simple like a fruit pouch or yogurt in the afternoon between lunch and dinner.

One in the afternoon usually. Dinner is fairly late, so she doesn't want to wait.

@stargal: the French don't do snacks. I think it's whatever your child is used to.
coconut / 8299 posts
@stargal: I used to give snacks to my son and realized that he wouldn't eat very much during lunch/dinner. So we cut down on snacks a lot and he eats much better now. The snacks turned him into a picky eater because he wasn't hungry at lunch/dinner. So he would just pick at his food (and he was the the piiiiiickiest eater ever). Ever since we cut/stopped the snacking, he actually eats almost everything on his plate.
I think it depends on the child. But for my son, snacking didn't. work. If he's hungry in between meals, we might give him a little bit of fruit or some nuts. But he's just not a snacker type. We just make sure his 3 meals a day are nutritious and healthy.

@Mrs. Jacks: funny you say that, I was just thinking that to myself, that were like the French I guess. haha.
@banana: that's what I think would happen to my son if I gave him a lot of snacks too!
