I know being a new mom somehow entitles everyone and their mother to have an opinion as to what you are doing right or wrong, and I generally ignore them, but I wanted to see what you guys think on this one.
I have had an overactive letdown and over supply, which I seem to be getting under control as baby adjusts better (she's 4 weeks). I have been offering one breast per feeding, and she eats well - I have multiple letdowns and she seems to be getting a ton of milk (judging from what I can hear her gulp down, her man burps, and her diapers, not to mention she's gaining really well). So everything is going pretty well.
Only issue is she eats a ton - like clusterfeeds all day and doesn't really like to nap during the day, so she's pretty much attached to my boob all day. Again, I think this is normal behavior for a newborn, and she is iugr so she has a lot of catch up weight to gain. But everyone keeps telling me I am encouraging her constant eating by offering only one breast, because she's probably emptying that breast in the first 10 min and the rest of the feeding she's getting less milk, even if I'm having multiple letdowns. Most feedings are 15-20 min, with an occasional longer one. And that thats why she's hungry again so soon. But I'd read that the latter part of the feeding is when she gets the fattiest hind milk which is satiating. Also, I'm hesitant to give her the second breast mid feeding and make her struggle again (she struggles the most in the first few minutes on each side and then levels out).
So what do you guys do? One breast or two? And does it really matter when I'm feeding her every 1-1.5 hrs?! Feeding one breast per feeding has been great for my supply issues.
