I have heard that wearing underwire while nursing can cause mastitis--true or old wives' tale? I am so sick of non-underwire bras but don't want to cause issues with nursing.

I lived in nursing tanks while I was home on maternity leave but since going back to work at 12 weeks I have been wearing under wires. It's been a month and a half and I haven't had any issues. I just feel much more supported.

I wear underwire (always have with both kids) and I've never had mastitis.

@Bluemasonjar: yep I'm doing a lot of nursing tanks but I plan to get remeasured for a bra in Jan and I would like to get something more structured! good to know you've had no issues
@Ash: yay! thanks!

I did. I had mastitis twice but I do not believe that wearing underwire had anything to do with either instance.

I never found any that were that comfortable, so I mostly wore non underwire nursing bras. When I was actually getting dressed up I wore regular underwire bras and just did some maneuvering to nurse. They just weren't as comfortable, but yeah, especially by the end of nursing and wearing the same bras for a year and a half.., it wasn't the most flattering.

I prefer underwire bras. I feel much better supported and have never had any problems.

I'm three for three. I've had three clogged ducts, and they've been the three times I wore underwire. I've never had one otherwise. I miss it so much.

I exclusively wore underwire bras for the whole 15 months I nursed. I had a big chest and I hated the shape a non underwire bra gave me. Never had a clogged duct or mastitis. I think if you're going to have issues, you're going to have issues. No matter what you wear.

I have been wearing underwire nursing bras this whole time after LO2 and no mastitis and NO CLOGGED DUCTS (I'm excited about that, because I had constant clogged ducts with LO 1).
I actually got a decent underwire nursing bra at Target. And I got the Lemon Zest Cake lingerie nursing bra for "working out" (pff), but now I'm wearing it as a regular every day bra because I find it really comfy.

I did all throughout except during the beginning few weeks. I had mastitis in the beginning, but it was related to my oversupply; once that was under control I had no issues wearing underwire bras.

@hilsy85: I did mostly tanks and non-wire bras the first time around but decided to try underwire this time. I feel my clothes look better and I have not had mastitis as a result (I did have mastitis but it was from going too long overnight without feeding/pumping).
I ordered mine through soma on the advice of someone here and they have been great so far!

I want to find some underwire nursing bras. I am so sick of structure less bras!

I have a couple but haven't started wearing them much, I have been getting lots of clogs this time around so I'm waiting for everything to settle... A tight nursing tank clogged one side at night for me so I'm not doing bras yet.

I only pumped and had a decent supply for the first few weeks but I did and didn't have issues.

I did for 2 years and I have had a few clogged ducts but never mastitis.

No mastitis here (I did have clogged ducts twice in 18 months of nursing baby 1, none so far in 4 months with baby 2), and I normally wear underwire nursing bras - I think if they fit properly they don't contribute.

I wear sleep nursing bras at night, and usually wear regular underwire bras (in a bigger size) during the day and I've never had mastitis with either baby.

I'm 7 months PP and I would LOVE to have an underwire pump/nursing bra. Right now, I wear a non-underwire pump bra to work. Bah.

@blackbird: is that the simple wishes hands free one?
I was wondering how that works if you wear a different bra to pump...do you take off your bra and put on a different one before you pump? Seems like so much work!

I mostly wore non-underwire before I went back to work at 8 months PP. Then I wore underwire nursing bras or normal bras and just changed into a hands-free pumping bra when I pumped. No clogged ducts or mastitis.

@hilsy85: no, mines from the Dairy Fairy. But I was taking off my bra, putting on the hands free one, then I had to get dressed again.....and it wasn't conducive to car pumping.

With DS1, I wore mainly no underwire bras and would get clogged ducts regularly. With DS2, I wear mostly underwire bras and haven't had one clogged duct. I don't think it's related to the bras though.

I didn't with C (because I was super paranoid and thought it would be the end of my nursing days), so I had floppy boobs for 1+ year.
With H, I tried them out and it was SO MUCH BETTER. I have a larger chest (G cup pre-pregnancy/nursing), so it made me feel a lot more comfortable to have underwire. Never had a clogged duct or mastitis or anything (but I had a clogged duct with C and a no-underwire bra... go figure).

I wore underwire nursing bras while nursing both LOs (1 year each/2 years total) and I never had mastitis or clogged ducts.
